Peugeot To Ax15 Swap, Parts List?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I almost hate to ask, but I've used the search tool and cannot find what I'm looking for. I plan to swap the Peugeot 5 speed in my 88 MJ for an AX15. The truck is two wheel drive and will remain so. What parts do I need to perform the swap and what donor vehicles should I be looking for? Thanks in advance for your replies.

Any manual MJ or XJ 89 and up should have an ax-15. You say you want to keep it 2wd, but from my ventures to the jy your only really gonna find 4wd trans with a transfer case attached. I'd grab it, since it can still be used for 2wd, and gives you the option later on down the road to go 4 wheel. I'm gonna take a guess and say you have a dana 35, however I'm not sure if you're gonna need a new driveshaft. I'm fairly new to this also, so some people with more experience can chime in here anytime. You should replace the clutch while your at it, since the trans needs to be off to do so. What engine do you have? I think that makes a difference in the gearing of the tranny, just make sure the donor vehicle has the same engine as yours.

Transmission

Slave cylinder

AX-15 crossmember

As far as a driveshaft change, I'm not sure.  4wd BA 10/5s and AX-15s are the same length, but I'm not sure about the 2wd ones.  They appear to be the same, but there could be a subtle difference not noticed in the picture.

If you get a 89-91 transmission, the pilot bearing will be the same as the BA 10/5.  If you get a 92+ trans, you'll need a pilot bushing from a 74 CJ 304 as the tip of the input shaft changed diameter.

Also, the changeover to the AX-15 was done mid 89, so you can find 89s with the BA 10/5.

Getting a 4wd transmission is an option, and may even be preferable if you can get a deal on a trans/t-case combo and don't mind paying to have your rear driveshaft cut down.

I had to order an aftermarket cross member for my swap.. And my tranny did not come with a mounting plate now that was a pita...

I bought a rusty's crossmember I haven't had any issues with it.

However if possible find a tranny with the external slave. This way if the slave goes out (and the internal will) it will be easier and cheaper to replace

Thanks to all for your replies to date. My MJ is equipped with a 4.0L six, an amazing engine. I have always liked straight six cylinder engines. I learned to drive in a 50' model Chevy truck with a 235 six. Why Detroit discontinued the straight six is beyond me. Too reliable and durable i suppose? But I digress.

Questions:

Can the existing clutch master cylinder be used with the MX slave cylinder?

Regarding the clutch, Is the input shaft spline count the same on both tranny's?

Any issues with connection of the speedo cable to the tranny?

Lots-O-Knowledge here, I'm glad I'm a member.

Finding the trans isn't as bad as finding that stupid crossmember.  I imagine that many people will keep the trans around when scrapping a vehicle, but toss the crossmember.

When I ditched my Peugeot, I kept the stock crossmember. There were several unused holes in it from the factory, so I tried a TJ transmission mount. it fit both the crossmember, and the ax-15. It ended up offsetting the transmission so i flipped the crossmember and now it sits dead center in the transmission hump. You will lose the exhaust hanger, but I ended up cutting that plate and redrilling the holes to fit between the tranny and tranny mount.

The issue with the crossmember isn't the mounting holes, it's that the AX-15's crossmember has a drop in the middle to accomodate the transmission's size, and allow correct u-joint angles and to keep it away from the tunnel.  You can make up for it with a 3/4" T-case drop, since they're so hard to find.

Hi Everybody,

I'd like to revisit this topic for a minute or two. I posted this almost a year ago and procrastinator that I am I haven't done the swap. Well the BA10 in the Comanche has gone to a better place and so I can't put it off any longer. I have a few "other" questions related to the swap. I'll probably buy an AX15 and bell housing off the bay. I've checked locally and there seem to be none available. For clarification, my truck is a 1988, 2wd, Comanche. So here are the questions:

1. Which year AX15's can be used with a speedo cable?

2. I plan to use a bell housing with external slave cylinder. Any year or model restrictions there?

3. Does the input spline count on the AX15 differ from the BA10?

4. On the two wheel drive tranny, does the output spline count differ?

Thanks again for your comments.

1. I believe the cable is universal.  However, there may be a diff with the HO vs. Renix.  That's 91+ Jeeps.

2. The external slaves started in 94.  So you should look for 94+ AX15/bells.

3. AFAIK the AX15 was alway 23 while the BA10 was 21.

4. Don't know.  Sorry.
