Road Hammer Posted April 19, 2013 Share Posted April 19, 2013 Hi Everyone, I own an 88' Comanche, 4.0L with the Peugeot 5 speed. The truck has about 195K on it. Most the time, the tranny shifts exactly as you would expect an old tranny to shift, kind of sloppy, kind of worn, but it shifts without difficulty. On occasion, this transmission becomes very difficult to shift, as if something is out of alignment in the tranny, but then after a few days the problem will go away and the tranny again becomes easy to shift. I'm no transmission expert, but it seems to me that the problem may be other than the tranny. What else should I be looking at? While on the subject. I know this tranny is considered unsuitable for rebuilding, but are rebuild parts available? Other than the shift issue, this tranny has served me well until now. Thanks in advance for your replies. Geonovast Posted April 19, 2013 Share Posted April 19, 2013 A shifting issue like that, I would blame on the clutch. Check your clutch fluid level and condition, you may wish to try to bleed it, but there's a chance one of the cylinders is dying. Doesn't hurt to also check the level/condition of the trans oil. AeroNautical Posted April 19, 2013 Share Posted April 19, 2013 I've actually had similar issues with my Peugeot, most notable, at higher RPMs, if it was in third gear you could NOT pull it out until I either double clutched or slowed down enough for the transmission to let it go. My solution? Buy some higher end 10w30 gear oil with an additive like "anti chattering". That was half a year ago and I have never had another issue with it. Of course, my ultimate solution is an AX-15 upgrade. Get a transfer case and a new front axle and your good as gold. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
