Fuel Tank

Recommended Posts

My MJ is currently in the body shop getting restored.  The tech told me the tank is leaking.  After discussing options, I am looking at replacing it with a new (23.5 gal).  Rockauto list two brands - Dorman and Spectra.  Besides a $20 price dif, does anyone have knowledge/experience with either brand?  Do you know if one is better than the other?

I am not interested in getting a used tank, since any used tank is also 20 + yrs old.

Additionally, the tech recommended tank straps.  A Jeep parts cataloge list different straps for tanks w/ and w/o skid plates.  My MJ has a skid plate.  The Dorman and Spectra strap part numbers seem to match the parts "w/o skid plates."

Will the "w/o straps" fit on my tank with the skid plate?  Can the straps be modified to fit?  (The old straps have not come off yet to determine their condition.)

Both Dorman and Spectra are good brands in general.

The tank straps for the plastic skid plates just have bolts welded on to hold the plastic skid plates on. The regular straps could have the same done or be drilled to except new bolts.

I am running the 23 gallon Spectra tank in my '86. It seems like a quality piece and fit right into position. Heck, it even has a few dents caused by rocks that were bigger than I thought.

I am also running their tank straps. My GUESS is the straps for a skid plate do not have the 6 studs welded to the bottom side for the stock plastic skid. Granted, I have never seen how a stock metal skid plate mounts on a Comanche.
