Eagle
More problems with the "new" (to me) 2001 XJ. After driving for more than about a half hour or 45 minutes, the radio light blacks out. If the radio isn't turned on, that means I lose the clock. Even with the radio or CD playing, the dial goes totally black. There's no discussion that I can find on radio dial illumination in the 2000 XJ FSM. Does anyone know if this is a simple bulb replacement, or is the only "fix" going to require replacing the radio? Alexia
http://www.lunghd.com/Tech_Articles/Electrical/1997_UP_Fuse_Identification.htm Check the 10 amp fuse #16 to see if it is damaged. Maybe just replace it for the purpose of diagnostics. Also replace Fuse #12 for the instrument cluster at the same time. I have seen issues where bad units on one of those circuits causes issues for the other circuit. As for illumination inside the radio the FSM will not have anything since the radio is considered a sealed unserviceable unit. The bulb or LED in there will be replaceable. It is just how crazy you want to get ripping the radio apart to do it and if it requires soldering to replace.
Eagle
Hmmm ... Which fuse panel, the one under the hood or the one behind the passenger kick panel?
Alexia
Hmmm ... Which fuse panel, the one under the hood or the one behind the passenger kick panel? Passenger kick panel. Properly called the junction block in the FSM.

Alexia
don't wana threadjack, but i will. my hivac panel has no illumination. should it?? and how to replace it?There is a bulb socket towards the right side it on the back of the face. For 1996 and down take out the four screws that hold the dash trim and carefully pop it off around the HVAC controls. Then unscrew the HVAC controls to get to the bulb. HOrnbrod
It's a #74. Or you can use an LED like this: http://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/led-vehicle-replacement-bulbs/74-led-bulb-1-smd-led-wedge-base/227/
Eagle
Be VERY careful changing that bulb. It's like a micro-mini version of the bulbs for the gauge cluster -- the bulb itself is like a tiny version of an old flashbulb, with a glass base and two exposed wires that snaps into the socket. The socket itself is a quarter turn bayonet mount into the panel. The ears on that little socket are VERY fragile. Be gentle or at least one of them will snap off.
