2.5 Starter?

Recommended Posts

I don't see why you couldn't use any 2.5 Starter.  There may be differences with different part numbers, but that doesn't mean they're not swappable.

The 2.8 starter might not, can't say for sure, I've never worked with one.  It's feasible it mounts to the block differently.

The Jeep 2.5 and Chevy 2.8 will not interchange. The 2.8 mounting bolts are vertical, bolts into the block. The 2.5 are horizontal, bolts into the bell housing. As many of them things as I have replaced, i should have remembered it without having to go look. The Jeep 2.5 and 4.0 starters are physically similar and will interchange. Electrically the 4.0 will probably have heavier windings. Going to tear a couple apart and compare later today. We'll see.

The Jeep 2.5 starter does not bolt into the bellhousing.  It bolts into the block.  If you look at an AX-4/5 bellhousing, you can see there's no bolt holes for starter.

This is correct, the bolts on mine go straight up like a GM.

Well, I looked. The 2.5 starter does mount with two bolts going up into the block. Wondering where I went wrong there. I looked at a 2.5 block I had on the ground and didn't believe a bolt that small could hold a starter. Solved one problem but created another one. I have 11 starters on the shelf all marked 2.5. So how did they get marked that way and what are they off? The 2.5 and 2.8 still will not interchange. The Jeep is inline bolt pattern and smaller than the Chevy staggered pattern.

Note to self. When Corry says something. take his word for it. LOL
