2 Wheeldrive to 4 Wheeldrive

Recommended Posts

I've searched but haven't found my answer.

I have an '89 Eliminator and that means 2 wheeldrive. I have the AX15. I want to convert to 4 wheeldrive. Will a transfercase from an XJ/MJ AX15 bolt up to my AX15? My question refers to the output shaft of the 2 wheeldrive tranny.

Another route might be a NP219 or NP208 from my FSJs. Both are from behind TC727s. I don't really need the strength of the FSJ cases, its just that I already own them and know them to be good. As I understand things, I'll need the tranny/Tcase adapter for a D300 Tcase to swap them in and I would guess, driveshaft mods.

Seems it would be easier to use the XJ/MJ parts.

Any knowledge and/or links would be appreciated.

To the best of my knoledge the XJ/MJ ax15's are all 23 spline so as long as the T case is same..YES it will bolt up.

Just be sure of orig AX15 app is from the XJ/MJ as there are clocking issues for that tranny from diff vehicles... CW

You'll need a 4wd AX-15. It is technically possible to convert, but it is generally not cost effective.

YES I should have mentioned that...kinda assumed you would know it..shouldn't do that I know! :D

Thanks Pete!!!

So, I need a 4 wheeldrive output shaft? If so, then getting a complete tranny/Tcase would be the way to go it seems. I was just hoping to remove the tailshaft and bolt the Tcase up. I didn't think I could but hope springs eternal...

For the details. It is easier to find a 4wd ax15 for this conversion. Sources claim that you can change the mainshaft in the 2wd tranny to 4wd but this is a lot of work. Wwhen we first looked at this swap it appeared you could just unbolt tailshaft and bolt on t-case (LOL). It's not a difficult swap and most of the major things can be handled in a weekend with buttoning up all the little things afterwords

Find yourself and XJ donor and save the headache, I peice milled the swap but if I had it to do over again I would find a complete vehicle to make the swap easier. besides 4 door XJ donor are getting real cheap these days.

I can pass this on to the AMC-list. There are quite a few people back east looking for 2wd AX-15s and AW4s (to put into AMC cars, like I'm going to do with the '82 Spirit I bought my wife. It only has 60K miles on it original!) and 4x4 ones seem to be a dime a dozen there.

I wish, this way a 4x4 AX-15 will set you back at least $300 from the yard, and that's no bellhousing or anything else, just the trans itself.

I'll pass this on then.
