Ax4 Clutch Issues

Recommended Posts

I have a AX4 with external slave on my MJ. It's the older style slave on the passenger side.

Sometimes when I push in the clutch the shifter will not go in any gear. If I cut the motor it goes into gear fine. I'd like to bleed the clutch and see if that helps. I can't find the bleeder valve on the slave so I assume it's on the top. Will I have to pull the master and slave and bench bleed or is there a way to bleed these on the vehicle? If this isn't the problem my next guess would be a seized pilot bearing. Do the AX4s use a pilot bearing or a bushing?

You can bleed in the truck, but the externals must be removed from the bellhousing, and kept compressed during the bleed.  There's a special tool for it, but you should be able to use half an exhaust clamp and a metal rod.

So I unbolt the slave from the bellhousing, fix the piston so it stays compressed, and bleed as normal. Pump and hold bleed or gravity? Or I can borrow a vacuum bleeder if that would be better.

Remove the shifter knob, the cover, and the metal plate underneath. A 10mm socket (iirc) and about 8 inches of extension, and you can bleed it yourself sitting in the truck.

Man, that sure makes it easier. That slave cylinder is right above the cat converter and a pain to get to.
