88mj2.5 Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 Will a 5 speed and t case out of a 1995 yj i4 bolt up to my 88 2.5 mj looking to so a 4x4 swap and trying to figure tcase out and the extra gear would be nice any feed back would be great thanks Cody
mnkyboy Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 The clocking of the t-case will be a little different but it should fit.
88mj2.5 Posted February 1, 2013 Author Posted February 1, 2013 So the bell housing will bolt up to the back of the block? And i don't think that would make to much of an issue slightly different drive shaft angles?
Bounty Hunter Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 Yes, they'll bolt up, but the front output side of the transfer case will be closer to the tub than if using a XJ/MJ transmission. There may be fitment issues here.
Geonovast Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 5th gear won't be much use to you. The 2.5 tends to dog pretty bad in 5th with 3.55 axles. I did the same thing with an MPFI 2.5, and didn't even bother with 5th unless I was doing more than 70 on level ground. You can still use the trans obviously, for the 4wd conversion, but if you rely on 5th a lot, your mileage is probably going to go down. Just something to keep in mind.
Bounty Hunter Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 He's right, forgot the 2.5L 4spd was plagued with 3.55 gears, despite my MJ having the same setup LOL.
88mj2.5 Posted February 1, 2013 Author Posted February 1, 2013 Hmm thats good to know the front axle i am looking to get has 3.55s i was gonna jack the back up to check before i buy it and could tail shafts be swaped to make the 4 speed work? And thats shocking never knew that with 5th gear I'm still pretty new to the mj world lol
Bounty Hunter Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 No. You can use the 5spd, just don't plan on using 5th gear unless you gear the axles lower.
mnkyboy Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 With 3.55s and 33" tires I rarely could use 4th gear.
88mj2.5 Posted February 1, 2013 Author Posted February 1, 2013 Wow thats nuts prly to to at least 4.10 before it gets lifted then
mnkyboy Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 I'm at 4.88 now and it finally feels like I could use 5th.
mnkyboy Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 Not sure, I started car pooling just before I did the gears so it doesnt see much time on the road anymore. I would guess 18-20mpg but fuel mileage tends to average a little lower here due to terrain and our ethanol blend gas.
88mj2.5 Posted February 1, 2013 Author Posted February 1, 2013 Thats awesome I'm glad to hear that i wanted to build the truck but i didnt wanna loose the mpg
