big66440 Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 I've read a durango steering gearbox will mount on comanches is it true? if so what are the advantages?
mvusse Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 They are stronger. They are also bigger around which means you need to space it way from the frame more than the stock aluminum bracket does. Some also have a shorter stroke meaning you need to disassemble the box and modify it to get your full steering range back.
big66440 Posted January 26, 2013 Author Posted January 26, 2013 Thanks, so it's really not a direct bolt on deal right?
mvusse Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 Not quite. I does accept the same steering column, the same pitman arm and has the same 7/16 bolt holes in the same place.
big66440 Posted January 27, 2013 Author Posted January 27, 2013 Got it, the added strength would be more beneficial for off roaring right?
MtnClimber Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 Got it, the added strength would be more beneficial for off roaring right? And when you're using larger-than-stock tires (thinkin 33's and up). There are two different options as far as the Durango box goes; plow and non-plow versions. 98 Durango with a V8 option is a start, I forget which one at the moment. I'll get back to ya. I've done extensive research between the two options. Stay tuned...
mvusse Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 But the only issue I have had with large tires and a front axle was one of the steering box bolts ripping through the frame. Upgrading the frame where the box mounts is more important than upgrading the box.
MtnClimber Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 You can upgrade the frame area with a C-Rok steering brace or one from JCROffroad
