Goose
If you plan on highway driving, 3.73 or 4.
MancheKid86
I'm running 35's on 3.55 gears, great for highway economy, Okish for wwheeling, 33's on 3.55's should be no problem, Go to 410 if your looking to do a lot of trail riding, It will have worse economy on the highway tho, because the amount of exyta rotations for the tires to go the same speed
86customanche
33s shouldnt be a problem with your lift and gearing on and off the road. It does depend on the backspacing of the wheel some though.
cody4359
are you 4.0, manual or auto. 33" and 4.10 sucks, no power on the highway and always down shifting for very small inclines. ive alwyas thought for a 4.0/aw4 4.10 for 31", 4.56-4.88 for 33" and 4.88 for 35". i went from 4.10 on 35" to 33". i now have 4.88 on 33", great in the city, less strain to get going but 70 mph its about wound out. 4.56 would be a little more hyw friendly. checkout grimmjeeper.com for some conversions that will show you what rpm at what mph with XX tire size. it was within 100 rpm of my setup and that can be contributed to tranny slip. Guanaco.13
It is an auto trans, on road 70 percent of the time but when the build is complete I want to have a good 50/50 on road/off road rig (a weekend warrior). And yes good on highway's I travel almost 80% on highways, interstates (70 mph) and 55mph roads. so I still need power but also need something thats not going to blown off road neither. I also don't want it to drink fuel like crazy. I want 32's more because I don't want the truck to look like all tires neither or will 33's still look like there is some lift and not just all tire if you know what i mean???? FrankTheDog
4.10's and 32" with a stick. We get 18-19 mixed driving with our 98 XJ. On a trip to Tennessee I got 22 mpg all interstate at 70+ mph. This was with 3.5 lift, 4.10's and 265/75/16 BFG Rugged Terrains. On the way back I got 15 pulling a 1982 VW camper bus. I wish I knew that they weighed 4300 lbs before I went down there. I'd still go 4.10's with an auto too. Stock your running a 28" tire with 3.55's. With 33's I'd go with 4.56's. jpnjim
Find some used 32's, they're an in-between size, and are usually cheap when you find them. Mount em up, and see for yourself what you like. If you like the rpms in THIRD gear, you'd like 4.56's, since your current 3.55 rear is almost exactly what 4.56's will be in OD fourth. If highway driving in third is too rev-y for you 4.10's would probably suit you better. Who knows, you might even like the gears you have, 1st through 4th with 32's, Or you might think the tires themselves are not big enough. Then sell the 32's for what you paid, and start the testing all over again with 33's
jpnjim
Oh, and maybe I misread your post, but don't use 15x10" wheels with 32x11.5's, especially on an XJ/MJ. Narrow is better for the wheel bearings, and tight ft wheelwells. I like 15x7's or 8's for 32x11.5's and 15x8 for 33x12.5 Even better if you don't mind tall & narrow is 33x10.5's on 15x6 to 15x7's
FrankTheDog
I'm running 16x8's with 4.5" back spacing with 265/75/16's with a 4.5 RE lift. I've been very happy with the fitment of everything. The tires tuck in nice under the flares. There are a lot of load range E tires on craigslist for mostly street tires. I paid $80 for my first set and got the second set for free from my brother. Both BFG's.
