Removing The Cab

Recommended Posts

This is probably a stupid question but would a sawzall be enough to get through the frame to remove the cab as a whole piece? Local you pull it has a Comanche with a good body on it but I am on a time constraint on getting it out of there. They refuse to sell the truck as a whole or i'd just go that route. I'm considering just cutting the frame around in front and behind the cab. Another consideration is where to cut the floor to allow the rest of the cab to be removed.

It's a unibody. Once you separate the uni from the body ... then what are you going to do?

Better idea would be to cut the bed frame rails a foot or so behind the cab, then see if they'll sell it that way. That part is spliced on anyway. If they won't go for that, also cut the front frame horns forward of the firewall. Those can also be grafted back on.

I don't think you should even consider trying to separate the cab from the rails.

:agree:

Every state is different with their laws and every JY has their own policy. A couple years back a JY had a very nice MJ in their yard. I tried to buy the whole thing and was flat informed no way. Kept bugging the owner and making a pest out of my self. Finally pinned him down and asked him why not. His reply, state law. Once the title has been turned in to the state by a salvage yard the vehicle cannot be sold except in pieces. I asked him how about if I removed the dash, with the VIN tag and left it on the ground. He thought about that and agreed to it. Depending on how co operative the Yard owner wants to be, there's always away. Sometimes.

I went back to talk to the bossman about a price for the bed, cab, front fenders, fuel sending unit and frame if needed. For the cab alone, and I would have to strip it out completely they wanted $161, almost $400 for everything I was asking for. About the only reason I was looking at it was because everything lined up on the doors and fenders and had minimal body damage. I will just plan on cutting off the rocker panels and cab corners which are the main things I want to save off it as they do not show much rust if any. PO put a layer of primer on the entire truck before selling it to the JY but that beats the nothing that is on mine. lol
