Error Code 41

Recommended Posts

Hello Fellow Comanche addicts, I recently have been getting an error code 41 when I first fire up the Comanche in the morning when the temperature is below 50 degrees. I have a DRB II reader that throws the code...actually it throws the description "field generator unable to swith properly" which I can google to find it is an error 41. I already know it involves cleaning battery temrinals, alternator terminals, and the possible replecement of the alternator and cables. Being the Comanche nut I am I have some Kelly's work in progess cables ready to replace my old ones, and a 140 amp alternator ready to replace the old 90 amp. I could replace them easily, but like most of us I hate wasting money, is there something much simnpler that I am missing?

That's a pretty common one Joe. It's usually caused by sticking worn alternator brushes and they stick worse in colder weather. Clean up the mains cables; if no help it's probably the alt on way out. I'd say it's a good time to switch to Jon's mains cables and replace the alt. I did the same about two years ago.

Thanks Don,

I have been waiting to go with the new 4 AWG mains and 175 amp fuse system. My new alternator is 140 amps.

I am not certain how great the alterstart alternator is, but I picked it up three years ago for a very reasonable amount of money.

I went with the 4 AWG mains cables, 150A ANL kit, and the Nippon Denso 134A Dodge V8 alternator. Runs everything well. When you get it done you may have to change the volt meter sensing point for it to read actual charge voltage to the battery regardless of voltage drops caused by loading from dual fans, H4 had lamps, etc.
