nickhuts Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Leaking from bellhousing, ax15,4.0 1990 Do i need to drop the transmission? Off road only, I don't plan on putting more than 5000 miles on the truck. Is there a write up of this? ( sorry my phone is my computer) thanks!
05mxdiesel Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 Yes transmission must be dropped unless you have a new external slaved AX-15. Plan to spend half a day or so to replace it. I did it myself but a helper makes it a whole lot easier.
nickhuts Posted October 4, 2012 Author Posted October 4, 2012 I have a car lift, transmission Jack, I replaced it last night in 3 hours. Thanks!
specialkeay Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 How can I tell what kind of transmission I have? I have a 1989 4.0L, 5 speed, 4 wheel drive does any one have any thoughts?
87MJTIM Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 The BA10 had phased out by '89. So, if it is original, it is most likely an AX-15. A way to verify it is to look at the trans. If the case is split vertically, left and right halves, then it is a BA10. If it split horizontally, top and bottom halves, then if it is an AX 15.
Geonovast Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 The BA 10/5 was phased out IN the 1989 model year. IIRC the change was right around the new year, but a good amount of 89s still had the pukey. http://comancheclub.com/topic/11104-how-to-tell-whether-you-have-an-ax-15-or-a-ba105-5spd-trans/
