Check your parts...

I just got back from a morning of chasing craigslist adds and picking parts. I came out okay with stocking the shelves some more but the real surprise was what was in the parts! I got home and backed up to the garage door to unload, lifted the rear gate, and started moving stuff. It wasn't until I got to the bottom of the pile (a tailgate) that I noticed that something wasn't right... more like things weren't as quiet as they should be. I pick up the tailgate and the thing is just stirring! It sounded like the latch mechanism was constantly being worked back and forth which was odd being that it was missing the handle. Then the shaking started. At this point I decided that it would be a good time to put down the tailgate and let whatever was going to happen just happen. Clearly, something was unhappy that I bought its home with a proper eviction notice first! So there I was, holding this violently moving tailgate, wondering where the best place would be to let out whatever was in there. Regardless of what it was I didn't want it running into the garage and letting it pick out its new living quarters. Out to the woods! I ran it out behind the house... and on to the neighbor's property... plopped down the tailgate and leaned it over onto the Jeep side. What was it? Mice! Lots of them! I'd say it was at least a dozen big mice came running out! I can't describe how happy I am that none of this happened with the tailgate in the ZJ. I let it sit out there until I was satisfied that nothing else was going to come out but not long enough that anything would want to go back in.

Moral of the story? If you're buying parts that have been sitting in a field for a while, be triple sure that there isn't anything trying to call your new purchase its home.

I used to pick up derelicts for a junk yard. One memorable wreck had hundreds of mice up in the a/c ducts and when I got inside to pop the trans into neutral, they all decided to come pouring out of the vents and defrosters onto my lap.
