Internal slave trans swap on a 98 Cherokee

Recommended Posts

I'm looking at swaping the 4WD parts from a 98 Cherokee into my 90 Comanche 2WD. I know what I need to do to install the newer trans on the older motor, but here is my question, what do I need to swap the older 2WD trans onto the H.O. 4.0L? I want to re-install the 2WD stuff onto the Cherokee to either re-sell it or keep it myself for a kids / parts runner / daily driver. I want to keep the renix engine in the Comanche, as I'm planning to swap over to propane.

The only thing the 98 won't have is the 4x4 lever trim/indicator, everything else should swap out.

Brakes will need to stay with each axle......rubber brakes line will differ also and stay with each axle.........other than that?

Yokes of TC will differ to the rear drive shaft also.

You'll need a new rear drive shaft for the MJ..............XJ too probably.

TC will stay with each trans as splines will differ.......pretty sure of that too.

What about the pilot bearing? What would I need for a bearing to mate the old trans input with the HO 4.0?

The shafts on the trans should be the same.

Someone else should confirm this though.

They are not.

In order to mate the newer trans behind the older motor, you'll need the pilot bearing from a 74 CJ with a 304. Rockauto.com has them for a few bucks. As for the older trans behind the newer motor, I have no clue.

I have studied the AX5...........only difference year to year is the int/ext TOB sleeve...........what about the AX15? never saw a year specific ad from rebuilders/suppliers.

You need to just stop posting. I find improper tech and offensive statements in most everything you post.

And anyone here with any sense or even a quick google will know that the pilot bushing changed diameter between 90 and 91. Thus, the input shaft IS different.

As far as making internal work on 97 and up...good luck. The masters are entirely different so you can not swap thee old to new without some custom work

I think I have found another donor that is a 90 with everything that I need, so for now I'm scrapping the newer Jeep anyway. I knew the pilot bushings were different, and knew about the 304 bushing, I was just hoping that the other bushing would be a known item as well. I figured that with the master cylinder I see them retrofitted to earlier models, that it should be just as easy to put it the other way around. Great in theory, but isn't everything!?!

I did happen to find a Cherokee the same year as mine, with brand new 33's, new rims, newer (less than 6 months driving) 4.5" lift, among other things for VERY cheap close to my place. A friend of mine did all the work on the truck and knows it very well, so I know I'm not being ripped off. Dude lost his job and just needs cash, and can't afford to have so many rigs anymore. Works perfect for me!!

1. We're not talking about the AX-5. The AX-5 is the AX-15's little brother, they are NOT the same transmission.

2. The AX-15's input shaft tip size changed in 1992, along with the size of the hole in the back of the crank for the bearing. I am not basing this on advertisements or parts supply websites. Quite frankly, those things are wrong more times than not. Most of them don't even know what years the MJ was made.
