99 XJ ECU in ZJ?

An acquaintance of mine is having a no-start issue with his ZJ. I'm not sure what year, but I know it's a 4.0. It cranks, but he's unsure of spark, and a code reader is telling him that it can't talk to the ECU. I was just wondering if it was possible to try an XJ ECU in a ZJ for testing purposes, or if there's any other ways to check the ECU.

I'm going to try anything else I can think of before I would swap the ECUs.

No, I don't think that will work, even if the plugs fit in the connectors. The ZJ has a body control module (BCM) that is required for the vehicle to start and I'm not so sure the XJ PCM would have the programming for all of that.

I have seen a few 97+ ZJ's have their BCM malfunction and not allow the car to start as it thinks it's getting stolen,..

Yea, it'll start, but then it will immediately die within a second or so of running.

Sounds like the SKIM went in the BCM. There is a wire you can ground to make it start and run without the SKIM.

Look it up on mallcrawlin for the exact wire to ground out.

You can also unlock the hatch with the key to reset the SKIM.
