2001 XJ Question

It appears that I am buying a 2001 XJ Sport. It has electric locks, but it doesn't appear to have factory remote entry. There are aftermarket systems that can handle this, but there are enough of them that trying to compare makes my head hurt. And it looks like I can get an alarm system with remote entry for $2 less than a simple (?) remote entry system without an alarm feature. Go figure.

Looking at wiring diagrams on-line, it seems there are three types: positive trigger, negative trigger, and reversing polarity. Does anyone know which type of control wiring Jeep used in the 2001 XJ?

Unless its a bare bones SE.....its got factory keyless entry. Look at the dome light, is it large about 6"x6" with two courtesy lights, one for the passenger, one for the driver? If so it has factory keyless entry, just needs a new remote programmed. If you provide a used remote to the dealer they can reprogram it to your vehicle in about 3 minutes and the will rape......er charge you .5 or 1 hours labor to do so.

I haven't picked it up yet so it's not here to check, but it is a Sport, not an SE. I thought all Sports came with remote entry, but the guru at the stealership says they all had electric locks, but they did NOT all have remote entry. Once I get it, I'll have them run a build sheet from the VIN. I'll add remote entry if I have to, but it would be nicer if I could just program the remote from my late, unlamented '99 WJ to work with the "new" XJ.

I had a bare bones 01 2WD Sport w. electric locks but no remote entry. Bought it new in Guam from AAFES (Army & Air Force Exchange Service so not an export model) w. slight typhoon salt water corrosion for $7K. Ran great and served me well around the island. They do exist.

The seller said he is not the original owner, but he has two keys and no remotes, so I'm guessing no remote entry. So I think I'll spring for one of JC Whitney's Valiant brand aftermarket units. The question is, which one? If anyone knows much about aftermarket alarms I would appreciate advice. Be advised: Price IS an object. The least expensive one I'm looking at is $29 and the highest I'm considering is (IIRC) $69. This is an eleven year old used car we're talking about -- I don't want (and can't afford) a $200+ all-in-one system that locks the doors, has an alarm, disables the starter, and offers remote start capability.

I really just want remote entry, but if a modest system that will do that doesn't cost any more with a basic alarm function, so much the better.

Factory keyless is stupid simple to install, too. I have an rke receiver and remote that match just sitting on a shelf.

This......very easy to install(especially if you install an overhead console at the same time), thing is, the cost to get a remote programmed to the receiver board just about makes it better to get an aftermarket.....unless you get a hookup.

It just pisses me off that dealers will still charge .5 hours or 1 hour of labor for something that takes so little time, IMO it ought to be done for free as sort of a brand/customer loyalty thing.

Ya I get the DRBIII is a super expensive tool and it takes a little time for someone to walk out to a vehicle and do it, but c'mon!

Eagle before you jump the gun just double check and make sure it doesn't have the RKE in the overhead light, 1 minute with a phillips head screwdriver and you could know for sure.

true enough. simple solution...find an xj in a junkyard that has the remote, and get the RKE from that xj. bolt in and call it good.

oh!. you can program up to 4 remotes on the factory system. if you don't have one for the vehicle at all, acquire 4 of them. the dealership will charge you the same amount for programming one of them as they will for 4.

Man, I've been looking for years I have not found a matched remote and RKE unit. Last remote I found in a junkyard was in 2002 and it was the IR remote for the 93-96 XJ or 93-95 ZJ. I have not found any matched remotes to the RKE unit for years, I wish I could, I lent my mom my jeep two years ago and she lost my keys....including my only remote.

One of these days I'm going to buy a lot of used remotes on ebay, you find them for like $40 for 40 of em, go down with as many 99-01 RKE boards as I can find, leave the wiring exposed, and have them program a dozen matched pairs with 2 remote each. I figure that way I get the best bang for my buck.

That or I will find a cheap DRBIII and put it to good use.

Connecticut has not allowed pick-your-own junkyards for more than 25 years. And I doubt I'd have any luck trying to get a yard to go scrounging through XJs to look for one with the keys (and remote) and the unit. It makes more sense just in the gas I'd waste to buy aftermarket.

Eagle, I have an RKE and matched remote. I was planning on having that remote programmed as a second one for my xj, but the local junkyard actually saves remotes. I'll go get a few, have some programmed, and have a matched RKE and a pair of remotes available to ship to you with in a week. please verify that you have keyless by removing the dome light above the center console, and telling us whether there is a computer board there.

If so, great. this will work and be plug and play. if not, I will get you the appropriate parts to install. they are plug and play.

parts from 99-01 for the newer style remote, of course.

My 99 Sport has power locks but no keyless entry. My 97 donor had a small housing for the board between the visors, but the 99 has nothing there.

97 and older have the RKE unit between the visors, 98+ moved the receiver to the overhead light, which also changed styles in 98. if you remove the light and the wiring and board is there then it just needs a new remote programmed.

I expect to bring the "new" XJ home Thursday or Friday. Then I'll see what I can figure out. Yes, I would prefer to keep it Jeep, but if I can go aftermarket for $30 compared to spending a hundred to be purist ... in today's economy practicality is going to have to win. If this were a NEW XJ, then I'd be more concerned with keeping it all Jeep.

this is the benefit to doing it my way...I want to have some programmed for mine anyways, so I can just pull the overhead console and swap the RKE out once the dealership has programmed a couple for mine, then have them program two for yours.

Let combine resources on this, I can get several RKE boards and remotes sent your way and we have a bunch done at once.
