Is there a way to find the year on an aw4 tranny

There's a tag on the right rear side of the tranny. It should have the part no and date on it.

If it's 4x4, count the output splines. 21 is 1987 to 08/90. 23 is '91 up. After '96 another sensor was added for OBDII (I have one of those I installed in my '87) Functionally they are pretty much all the same. Different controllers are generally due to gearing changes.

 

Late model ones ('99ish +) have a swirled 23 spline output (tcases to match)
