after hoover dam bum on down to phoenix. want to make a trip to tombstone on one of the days

on way back I'm thinking hitting the grand cannon and staying near Sanfran over night.

what else would you do? i'll be driving my 2wd 94 XJ so no trail riding this time :-(

also what kinda check list would you do before leaving?

That's 12 hours straight driving time from Kfalls [if thats where you are at, more for Roseburg] to LV. Not counting stopping for breaks. That makes for a helluva long day driving. So does Phx to SF.

If you're hitting Hoover Dam and then to Phx, you'll be backtracking to visit the Grand Canyon. I suggest hitting the GC after Hoover Dam, and then staying in Flagstaff [unless you want to make the extra drive to Phx]. By staying in Flagstaff it will give you the chance to visit Meteor Crater outside of town... they close early [6pm] so its something to hit on your way out that morning on the way to Phx.

Route I would take with the information you provided: Way to Phx: Oregon to LV. LV to HD and GC to Flagstaff. Flagstaff to Meteor Crater to Phx. Remember, there's only so much to see at HD and GC... but you're in for some long days travelling.

My CSB: We picked up our LeSabre in April 2008 from McKinney TX and drove it to Bend OR.

Day 1: Dallas to Amarillo [smells like cows]

Day 2: Amarillo to Flagstaff via Albuquerque [neat city], Gallup [a dump but has classic Rt 66 stuff], and Petrified Forest [just missed Meteor Crater- 1 hour after gates closed]

Day 3: Flagstaff to Grand Canyon [avoid Flintstones tourist trap] to Kingman [a dump] to Hoover Dam to Las Vegas [very long day]

Day 4: LV to LA [easy drive, got pic of Zzyzx Rd exit sign... woo]

Day 5: LA [sightseeing] to to Hollywood to Malibu to Buttonwillow [a dump]

Day 6: Buttonwillow to Bend [long day]

lol i had a few  last night. but after looking at things in a better light :D I'm thinking

Day 1: Medford to Henderson.

Day 2: Henderson to Hoover Dam, on to GC then to Flagstaff.

Day 3: Flagstaff to Meteor Crater on to Phoenix, maybe on to Tucson. where we will stay

Return trip

Day 1: Tucson to Yuma

Day 2: Yuma to Sac

Day 3: Sac to Medford

This will leave us 9 day is Tucson/Phoenix area to visit and have day trips to other places (Phoenix Zoo/Tombstone/Copper mines).

i know there are some long drives in there, but my wife will be with me and loves to drive so we can switch off when needed.

I'm sure things will change between now and the time we leave but this sounds pretty good. also any things we should see on the way back?

Thanks for the input Ocean, i never new about the Meteor Crater :-)

This is mostly for my wife to see her dad, but want to make it an epic trip for our 7yr old. :-)

Unless you really have your heart set on Sacramento [i stayed there years ago and well, it sucks], a more interesting place to stay would be San Francisco, and is about the same distance and driving time from Yuma. More to see in the area, too: GG Bridge, Alcatraz, trolleys, and Lombard St [fun but congested] just to name a few of the countless points of interest in the area.

Should you go the SF route, swing through Napa and Sonoma for the vineyards, and Infineon raceway [sears Point] is at the north end of the bay, too. Remember the old startup screen for Windows with the green hills and blue sky? That pic was taken in Sonoma County... all the hills look green and fuzzy like that.
