Rear Springs

Recommended Posts

I need some help, I had to install a new set of rear springs on my MJ because one of my old ones were broke. Any way the only new ones that I could find were I guess for the Metric Ton Package. They had a total of 5 leafs, 3 thin and 2 thick. I have removed the longer of the 2 thick ones and installed doing a spring over. It is still way too high. Between the new springs and spring over, it looks like it is at about 8-9 inches of lift, way too much for 33" tires. Would it work if I removed the other thick one to go down to the 3 thin springs? I am concerned if I do this I will have axle wrap. How long til they settle? Any one got any suggestions.

Thanks

Those extra leafs are pretty think.

Because he is now SOA, he is getting lift from the extra helper thickness alone. But your right, not 8-9" .

I would worry about wrap as well....how about removing the one ton helpers and putting in your old helper in there place?

I was just thinking about switching back to spring under and see how much lift it has. I already front 6" spring in place, so I don't think it will net that much lift, but who knows it might.

I got the springs from Brighton Spring in Cincinnati. I called around and all the spring places told the only replacement springs that were available were the 5 spring pack with a payload number that I do not remember. My old springs were only a 4 spring pack. Obvisously they were for the Metric ton truck I beleive. When I get the front back together, I will expirement with a few ideas and suggestions that you guys gave and see what I can come up with. When I get the front back together I will take a good picture of it and post it. It will show how high it is.

If it's really that tall, maybe go SUA and use a slightly longer shackle to compensate for the lost lift?

If your 5-leaf springs were built using the original metric tonne spring specs for the earlier 2 thick leaf / three thin leaf configuration and a 9-1/2" arch, the payload is 1500#. See the MJ 5-Leaf Metric Tonne Leaf Springs thread in the Pub forum for all the specs. If you go back to the original SUA config, and use an extended shackle like the TeraFlex, you should expect a total lift of at least 3-1/2".

I measured a couple things on the rear. I have 33X12.50" tires on it now. From the top of the tire to the bottem of the fender flare is 12" and the fender flare has not been altered or moved up at all. From the ground to the top of the bed is 54 1/2". I should have measured before the installing the new springs and tires. I had 235 75 15 tires on it before the lift. So I do not know what the measurement would have been from the floor to the top of the bed.

From a previous post:

"Stock height: Measure from the top of the axle tube to the underside of the frame rail just inboard of the bump stop. For 4WD models this distance should be 9.2 inches, plus or minus 1/2". For 2WD models the dimension is 8.2" plus/minus 1/2"."

After installing metric tonne springs my distance went from 8" to 11". My old springs were sagging a bit.
