Joop
Planning to slaughter my recently purchased XJ this weekend. Going to put engine and other stuff in my MJ. Thing is i must do this at my companys workshop (i only have a SMALL garage), meaning i can drive in the XJ after work friday and i MUST be finished and have the remanings on a trailer before monday morning, or else my boss or coworkers will be   Therefore i need to know if there is any big problems i may get into? Something thats not covered in the haynes manuall and two jeep-newbies-but-still-experienced mechanics can't figure out by themself? Hate having troubles when short on time!!!! XJ is 90 3door 4.0 auto.
Oizarod115
don't forget the CPS on top of the bellhousing, A WHOOOOLE lot of people have done this... and the truck will NOT start without it
mjeff87
Hmmmm....you'll need an E12 (external torx) socket for the top two bellhousing bolts. What all are you pulling besides the engine? Jeff edit: re-read your post. Are you pulling the XJ engine and transplanting it into the MJ in your sig? ( in a weekend?) If so, you might have driveshaft length issues, among other things. I'm hoping to pull out everything needed to install the engine into my MJ + some other parts like wheels, axels, seats, bumpers, lights, etc and sell what i don't need myself. I'm just tearing down the XJ this weekend, think thats plenty work in so little time. Once i get everything into my own garage i have all the time in the world :D Yes i expect som driveshaft length, gearing and electronics issues, but deal with that later
pingpong
If you are junking the xj after pulling parts, my favorite way of pulling engine/tranny/t-case as one is to remove front header panel/ radiator ( i use the most destructive means available usually sawzall :D) and pull the combo through the front. Axles are only a matter of using said sawzall again to LCA/UCA's. the rear is a matter of the smoke wrench to the u-bolts. I can ussually have everything off a XJ in 3 hrs, but I have done 1 or 2 :brows:
minydigger
Are you planing on using the wiring from the XJ?? I did when I went from a 2.8 to the 4.0l and it made the elect. end much easier. If you do make sure you take all the wiring.
Joop
pingpong: sawzall was exactly what i was thinking :D everything is fubar in the front anyway...exept the bumper, NOT A SCRATCH! how did the PO manage that?? damn thats gotta hurt.. minydigger: i will try to tear out all wiring as well, and off course take pictures/notes off the connections. mjeff87
Gotcha now. Wasn't sure what you were up to initially. Do like Pat says...sawzall and cutting torch..you never have to worry if you've got the right size tool with them  Be sure to post carnage pics as you go... sinnaevd
i did my other MJ in a matter of 6 hours when i did it, and that was without the sawzall and torch. just take ur time and mark all electrical connections, and it should be a fairly straightforward job. keep ur dash from the XJ as well
rejeep
Ive stripped dozens of XJ's best way is... (on my soap box) 1.start in the engine compartment.. remove all the crap (air box, evap cansiter, washer fluid bottle, coolant etc) 2.Take the rad and support off, drain collant and engine oil 3.cut the front crossmember out 4.Carefully take the harness off the engine (starter, alt, tranny, pcm) 5.removed tranny shifter/linkage and Tcase linkage (don't forget int. handles/shifters) 6.Driveshafts 7.Cut away or unbolt the exhaust 8.Support the rear of the Tcase with a floor jack and removed the main crossmember, but remember to unbolt the tranny mount from the crossmember. 9.Hook the engine up and yank the whole damn thing out engine/tranny/tcase all in one shot. I just dit this today.. stripped the 89 I am parting.. took about 4 hrs to get the drivetrain out.. but the more you do this the quicker it goes. Good luck.. ohh little tip... the oil filter blocks the passenger side motor mount bolt. Unscrew the filter, loosen the filter adapter and rotate it 90 deg. then you can tap the bolt out. put it back before you lift the engnine. pingpong
I would do it the real easy way... Unbolt the wiring harness from fire wall. Follow wires to components, if it is for lights, and unneeded crap cut and tag, leave engine intact, with all wires in place. Cut all hoses and lines, and drain on the ground, or in a suitable bucket, preferabl;y not where you are working. Cut down both sides of the grille with sawzall. Then cut down both sides of the front, on each side of the radiator (best done with a torch) Support engine with cherry picker, and remove motor mounts...(I just cut them using a torch) Take a ratchet strap and secure rear portion of trans to the picker... Cut trans x-member, (unbolt if u like) and pull the motor out the front. Removing axles are easy just make sure your torch bottles are full During disassembly I had sold most of the sheetmetal and interior to locals who wanted it for their rigs This is what you can end up with if done correctly Here is how I cut my front Just some food for thoughts. That was a 300 dollar xj with no title.. I think by the time I was done parting it out... i had made 1000
