mpace6a
Hello all, finally got some notable work done on my manche, so thought it was time for a build thread. My truck is an '86 long bed, and HAD a crappy GM 2.8 V6, AX5, and not sure which transfer case, didnt really matter to me since from the beginning i planned on pulling it all out. Tomorrow I'm getting a donor '88 XJ for an engine, tranny, and transfer case. Its gonna end up with a 4.0, AW4, and NP242. Short term plans are to just get it running dependably. Eventually, as money allows, id like to start with a 4.5 lift, 33's, and some other misc. crap, then eventually do a 97+ swap. When I first got her PO had a floor jack in the back :fs1: GM's piece of crap v6... Finished pulling the engine today, broke 3 crossmember bolts.... Finally, the stupid thing is out More to come tomorrow once i get the XJ and start tearin it down. If time allows i should be cuttin and patching my rusted out floors, darn missouri :wall: Keep in mind I'm just a broke teenager tryin to finish high school, so its gonna be a slow build, but worth the wait
shelbyluvv
you are aware of the fact that you need massive front core support work to make a 4.0 fit in a 86 right? Look at how the radiators mount in both the XJ and the MJ and you will see the difference. Save the XJ for a later date and drop a 3.4 camaro or firebird motor in it and be done with it. BTW, nice black interior!
mpace6a
yea i know. the XJ is from a friend though, and really cheap which is why I'm doing it instead. plus ive heard nothing good about the ax5, and $500 for a good engine, tranny, and new tires is a bit hard to pass up. ive talked to some other members on here who have done this swap, so i know i have someone to turn to with questions. And yea, i love the black interior!
mpace6a
Well its been a while since ive been able to do anything on the Incarnate. Started tearing out the interior today so i could start on the floor repair. I knew it would be bad, wasnt expecting this :headpop: I knew it was worse than expected when i pulled up some of the padding on the drivers side..last time i checked when you pull up the padding, the floor isnt supposed to come with it :wall: Passenger side after some wire wheeling Drivers side..the worst :ack: Thankfully i have cut off wheels, a welder, and an old dodge hood to cut up for patches! Assuming nothing goes wrong with life, i should have it cut out and begin patching tomorrow!
86customanche
 looks like quite a project. You might have the only MJ with worse looking floor boards than mine.
86ComancheXNate
what is that little box with the AMC logo?
mpace6a
The yellow box is the computer for the old v6, havent messed with the wiring yet. something always comes up when your making progress. such is life and yea, the floorboards are horrid. the PO's son took it mudding, and blew the engine, then it was parked for 6 years. essentially, rode hard, and put away muddy
shelbyluvv
I think the box is for cruise control.
mpace6a
shelbyluvv may be right. I'm not positive, it was just an assumption
Dadinator
Yep, cruise control module is the yellow box. Had one in mine. Removed it as I am not having cruise.
mpace6a
Ah. I have no clue if it even works. May try it out at some point, but i don't like cruise. one less thing to pay attention to while driving makes it that much easier to fall asleep at the wheel. mpace6a
Well, may be a change of plans. Ive done some more research, and starting to think I may be in over my head with the 4.0. Does anyone know what years/vehicles the 3.4 came in that would swap in?
mpace6a
Does anyone know if my AX5 will bolt up to the a gm 4.3 v6? and will an NP242 tcase from an '88 xj bolt on to the ax5? From what ive read the ax5 is not a good transmission, essentially being a small car transmission that was put into jeeps and light duty trucks, but funds are low and its what i have for now. mpace6a
Been awhile since i updated, but just a quicky till i can get some pics up, I got another v6 to throw in for now, joined the navy and i ship out in august, so i don't want to throw a lot of money into the 'manche since i won't get to use it too much for the next few years, just enough to get it going and keep it running till i ship. Floors are repaired, little brother bought chassis saver for his xj, and there was lots left over! so the floors got the special treatment!
