WJ error code 9?

My room mate's 01 grand Cherokee limited 4.0L was throwing the engine code 9....

 

any help?

9 what? Engine codes should start with a P for powertrain, followed by 4 numbers.

thats what the engine code said on the reader was "9... hydraulic pump circuit malfunction" (just asked Robert what the reader said) power steering works, and has oil pressure. what other hydraulic pumps are there?

What is he using to pull the codes? Might be manufacturer specific, and not released to the generics. As far as hydraulic pumps go... The trans has a pretty expensive one that would have a pressure monitor on it.

we used the one at the auto parts store.. we are hoping that it is not something too expensive to fix :hmm:

Has he tried cycling the key on-off 3 times? I am not sure if it will show the codes on his, but it might. I don't know if they did that in 2001. That scanner at the auto parts store sounds shifty.

It's a good day when you learn something - gracias. I said that because I tried it on my 01 XJ and it didn't work. Nothing happened. :dunno:

My 2000 XJ would not do it either. But, my 04 WJ and 07 Cummins both do it. :dunno:

Interesting Bo. Also had a 96 XJ I bought new from AAFES in Guam on which I tried it several times with nada result. :dunno: Not worth pursuing the why.............
