what year is your jeep?

it should have a disconnect front axle, which means that when yuo're in 2wd the long-side axle shaft is 2 peices and it disconnects so that only the inner peice is spinning, meaning that the right tire is not connected to the diff unless you are in 4wd (or your disconnect is not functioning/disabled)

if you have a working disconnect it will not affect steering at all..

technically it shouldnt affect it either way since it is only meant to lock when torque is applied. but i haven't done it myself.

now to install one the carrier and the ring gear needs to be removed, is there any measuring clearances and such involved in that, or just mark it and make sure its torqued to the proper specs and reinstall?

Unless there's some other reason I've never heard of, the carrier only needs to come out if the cross pin hits the ring gear when you try to remove it. Had that problem with my front Dana 44 with 4.10s. If you keep track of where everything came from (bearing caps mostly) and put it back in the same way and in the same orientation, then the gears should be ok.
