jared
i was thinking of getting a lockrite "lunch box locker for my front d30 on my xj, i don't want to convert to lockout hubs, so i was wondering how much will this locker affect my steering on road? or should i save up and get the arb i want
Oizarod115
what year is your jeep? it should have a disconnect front axle, which means that when yuo're in 2wd the long-side axle shaft is 2 peices and it disconnects so that only the inner peice is spinning, meaning that the right tire is not connected to the diff unless you are in 4wd (or your disconnect is not functioning/disabled) if you have a working disconnect it will not affect steering at all.. technically it shouldnt affect it either way since it is only meant to lock when torque is applied. but i haven't done it myself. Eagle
A front Lock Rite doesn't lock when you're running in 2WD on pavement. When things get slick and you engage 4WD, it makes the front end want to "push" rather badly in turns when you're on the power.
CWLONGSHOT
Correct, But I will add, no matter what axle you run. Disco or NON-Disco, makes no difference. A lunch box locker will be invisible in 2WD. You will hear the ratcheting in turns, telling you its there. CW
Oizarod115
i thought so but i didn't want to give ill-advice
pingpong
It won't make any difference, unless you have really sensitive ears. As stated above you will only hear the ratcheting sound, associated with this type of lockers
jared
now to install one the carrier and the ring gear needs to be removed, is there any measuring clearances and such involved in that, or just mark it and make sure its torqued to the proper specs and reinstall? pingpong
Replace your ring gear bolts, and re-install. also replace your cross pin with one of those high strength ones. Also use redloc tite on the ring gear bolts
jared
no backlash or anything to worry about? where can i get ring gear bolts at? and who makes a stronger cross pin
pingpong
You can get them from just about anywhere that sells the Lock right should sell the crosspin, most of the times they include it with the purchase, and for the ring gear bolts I think you can get them from any ring and gear vendor. CWLONGSHOT
Also not all require the ring gears removal. I had to on a set of 4:10's but I believe 3:73-1 and lower numerically will not require it. CW
Pete M
Unless there's some other reason I've never heard of, the carrier only needs to come out if the cross pin hits the ring gear when you try to remove it. Had that problem with my front Dana 44 with 4.10s. If you keep track of where everything came from (bearing caps mostly) and put it back in the same way and in the same orientation, then the gears should be ok. 87manche
pete touched on the most critical part, the main bearing caps MUST go back exactly as they came off. I took a center punch, and marked them at the top, 1 mark on the left, 2 on the right, and matching marks on the housing.
pingpong
Ring gear bolts are only suppose to be used 1 time, they stretch when torqued.... is it OK to re-use them... I suppose, make sure you use lock tight. The bearing cap thing is super important
