Blue88Comanche Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 what would be the cause of about 30 degrees of play in the steering wheel? would it be the power steering gear box? or some other linkage, and what would need to be done to fix it? thanks
Pete M Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 you need to have someone saw the wheel back and forth while you crawl under and watch/feel for sloppiness. :thumbsup: could be anything in the steering or trackbar.

Comanche County Posted September 10, 2011 Posted September 10, 2011 Start first at the steering column linkage U-joint, follow that to the Saginaw steering gear box, then pitman arm, then drag link, Tie rod ends and Track bar. 30 degrees is a lot, I'm betting you'll find that slop in the gear box. You can adjust some of the slop out by the adjustment screw on top of the box. The more you adjust it, the faster it wears out though.

I have not checked the steering box to the wheel, but i will do that when i get the Comanche home. and its coming home on the back of a trailer there is no way i will drive it as is
Comanche County Posted September 10, 2011 Posted September 10, 2011 Check the three hole aluminum steering box brace that is sandwiched between the frame wall and the box, those braces break sometime. Check the three steering box bolts, the box itself could be loose.
Blue88Comanche Posted September 13, 2011 Author Posted September 13, 2011 i was finally able to get someone to help me find the steering problem.. got my little brother to turn the wheel while i was under it.. it looks like the track bar is loose, is there a bushing that needs to be replaced or do i just tighten it? or does it need to be replaced all together.. it is loose on the drivers side thanks
Pete M Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 no bushing, it's a tie rod end. if you're lucky it's just loose, but more likely is that it's worn out and the track bar needs to be replaced. keep en eye out for ovaling of the hole in the bracket that the tie rod end goes into. :thumbsup:
