Used AX-15 stuck in reverse

Recommended Posts

My friend bought a used AX-15 from a guy across the state. Well he calls me up and says that it's stuck in reverse.

I think that the shifter cane was pulled when the tranny was in reverse, and that he doesn't have it installed properly, any opinions?

Does the tranny need to be manipulated out of reverse before the shifter will go in, and how?

If you remove the entire shifter assembly (using the 4 bolts, not just removing the rod), you can see inside and see where the shift arm's at. If it's in the 3-4 slider, you can remove the retainer springs on each side, the retaining bolt in the shaft, and the big female allen plug on the back(on a 4wd unit, with the T-case removed). You can then pull the shift arm out, put it back in in the 5-R slider, and put the shifter back on. Should be able to pop it out then.

It's anyone's guess. Buddy of mine just picked up an AX-15 that had the same problem, and that was it. The 5-R slider was pushed forward, and the shift arm was only able to get between 1-2 and 3-4.

Might not be a bad idea to pull the front case off and make sure nothing's broken though.

When I picked up my AX15 from the seller, it was stuck in reverse. He unscrewed the the back-up switch on the side of the trans and popped it out of reverse with a large screwdriver. He said that trick will work if it ever gets stuck again but I have not had any problems since then.

Couldn't really tell you which way, cause I didn't do it myself, just that it worked. Yup I'd suggest clutch in, and maybe remove DS as it's 2wd and easy to do. I don't think you can push it the wrong way, just don't get crazy with a pry bar. Imagine the internals, or pull up a parts breakdown.

I took the drive shaft out, delivered the crossmember and lowered the rear of the trans. After that I put a rod from seat to clutch to hole the clutch down. Remover the reverse light switch and used a flat head and pryed the fork towards the back of the jeep. Heard it click. Put everything back together and she is running good. Now I am changing the trans fluid, oil and valve cover gasket amongst other thing!
