'96yj fuel pump into '87 mj?

Recommended Posts

Howdy all,

I'm not holding my breath but, I finally had a reasonably good day and borrowed a fuel pressure gauge for my "only runs on starter fluid" MJ. Actually, due to the results of my first test, I drove back to my napa store and swapped the first for another one. Same results. The meter didn't even budge. Nada Nil Zip...no pressure from my fuel pump. As before when I pressed the valve in the fuel port, gas was present. It just wasn't present with pressure.

So, I'm talking with a friend about my Jeep's problems and ordering a new pump and filter and he says he happens to have a fuel pump out of a '96 Cherokee sitting at his home.

Good folks that you all are here, I pose the question to you. Will this fuel pump work in my rig?

Thanks, many thanks to all of you for any and all of your help on this problem of mine. As soon as I able able I will get my ride back "off-road again". Kinda a twist to the old song. And then.... I can start tackling the other issues, but at least she'll run agin..

It can be made to work but it's not a bolt in. The pump is shorter so the holding feature of the MJ won't work. I used 2 hose clamps and clamped it to the upright tube. Duct tape won't work because of being submerged in gas. The MJ is 2 spade plugs and the XJ is a plug. Very easy to modify. Check the rubber hose on the top of the MJ pump. There have been many instances reported here where the rubber hose has disintegrated, leaving a sticky gloop and the pump is good but the gas doesn't go any where except back into the tank. Oh,,YJ is Wrangler,

I must have told BlueMoon it was out of a YJ, but it definitely out of a 96 XJ.

I have now read that the 91 and up pumps are higher pressure - is there a way to regulate the pressure at the rail or in the tank?

I think it may be wise just to order the replacement pump for the year and model - then no worries :???: . Anyone recommend a place to get a replacement MJ fuel pump - and possibly a part number?

Thanks - Rich
