I'm slowly but surely doing the 4.0L/4x4 swap in my 86. Since its getting hard to find a decent donor for cheap that isnt a pos I'm going to try to piece it together from jy parts.

I think I'm gonna start by pulling a motor and tranny and rebuilding the motor if it needs it and then go from there.

Few questions:

What year cherokee should I look for an engine donor?

Any particular parts I should look out for?

Your gonna be better off with a parts car,its gonna cost a lot more in pieces and all the little odds and ends are gonna suck to gather up.

well another idea I've been tossing around in my head is to get a motor and tranny from the jy for a few hundred and have them both rebuilt. And then save up some money and get a donor for the rest of the stuff and then just sell the 2 left over engines.

rebuilds aren't exactly cheap. I think you'd likely still be better off spending the extra bucks on a decent donor with a good drivetrain but a bad body. heck, some guys have purchased perfectly good XJs (97+s in particular) and then gutted them for their swap. All depends in what you want in the end.
