Is there a differance between 3/8 thread bolt and a 3/8 pipe thread bolt. thanks

The pipe thread will be tapered to provide a tighter seal as it threads in. Not sure if the thread pitch and threads per inch are the same or not though.

Is it a standard tap i can get at auto part store or hardware. thanks

3/8 pipe thread is also 1/2" or so. It is the thread on the outside of a standard pipe with an inside diameter of 3/8".

 

I get individual taps from Ziegler Bolt and Nut. Imagine Fastenall will also have them.

 

Hardware stores *migh*. Sears and Harbor Freight sell kits with an assortment of different sizes.

So which is it that you need? 3/8" or 3/8" pipe thread? If you need 3/8" pipe thread, make sure the tap you buy says "3/8" NPT".

Then you need the local PLUMBING parts store, not the local auto parts store. Although 3/8" NPT isn't that unusual -- Sears will probably have it.
