had a guy rebuild my motor  he gave it back to me and it was burning 1 quart a week.

I took it back to him ,he told me the machine shop messed up .

I Just got it back its still burning oil !!!!!

Before He rebuilt the motor it never burned oil.

anyone have any ideas why its burning so much ?

Sometimes if you have used chrome moly rings, it may take a while for the rings to break in. Chrome moly is considered the better ring, but they are real fussy about cylinder wall finish.

Any rebuilt engine is going to burn some oil. The amount will vary depending on various circumstances. Biggest culprit will be the rings, takes time for them to wear into the cylinder walls. Second biggest oil leak will be the valve stems, Third will be gasket leaks. It all depends on how tight the clearances were and the materials used. I have rebuilt engines that used less than a half a quart of oil breaking in. I once rebuilt a Ford 300 used 3 qts in the first 200 miles, very unusual. However never burned a drop after that and I put over 20,000 on it before I sold it.

In an absolute worse case scenario it can take up to 1500 miles before every things seated. But that would be rare.

As for the time period it's meaningless without knowing the mileage. Do you put 20 miles a week on it? Do you drive 1,000 miles a week?

Following the rebuild in my Rubicon, she burned 3/4 of a quart in the first 500 "break-in" miles. 90K miles later ans it doesn't burn/leak a thing.
