the neutral of safety switches

hey just wondering i got an 87 automatic inline 6

 

i have almost all of the bugs out of it there is one glaring problem

 

sometimes the jeep will start in park or only start in neutral as well the back up lights do not work

 

i believe it is the neutral safety switch unfortunately for this year that means a 250 Dollar part

 

my question is to start is there when the key is in the on position is there a hot wire running to the neutral safety switch

Are you sure it's the switch? An improperly adjusted shift cable will do the same things your describing.

No. The ign sw has to be in the 'start' position, or the gear shift has to be in P or R for a voltage to be present.

wires B and C on the NSS connector are a black, and a black with white wire.

 

hooking those to themselves will bypass the NSS altogether, for starting purposes.
