:hijack: I was curious about the ZJ transmissions. I have heard nothing but negative comments on the ZJ trans, Is there a certain one that is worse than others and I should stay away from?

The 46RE, found only in the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9L Limited (but is also in many Dodge Rams, Dakotas, and Durangos with the 5.2L or 5.9L), seems to have a fairly common problem of having one of the snap rings break that holds the clutch pack together. Some of the trans experts believe it's from manually putting your shifter from drive to 2nd. Unlike the XJs, there is no 3rd gear position on the shifter - you need to disengage the OD by hitting a button on the dash to move into 3rd.

The 44RH (hydraulically controller) and 44RE (electronically controlled) are found behind the 5.2L V8 ZJs. I think '93-'96.5 got the RH and '96.5-'98 got the RE. These transmissions seem to hold up pretty well and there are many that go the distance.

I think the 4.0L got the 42RH/RE, but I really don't know too much about that combo of engine/trans to make too many comments on it.

Regardless of what transmission it is, they seem to be fairly finnicky about what fluid you dump in them. They call for ATF+2, which has been superseeded by ATF+4. It's a Chrysler spec fluid for a Chrysler transmission. I've seen many recommend changing the fluid and filter every 40K miles. 30K if you tow a lot.

So I take it you haven't had any problems with your ZJ Rob? I really like the look of the GC and I have my eye on a nice 97 limited with 118K.

In a nutshell, its on its 3rd front axle, the 249 AWD t-case needs to be replaced (242 under the workbench), and just general wear and tear. Its due for a new radiator and a thermostat when I get a chance. The plastic res on the end of the rad is leaking, and the stat is stuck wide open. All in all, it rides nice, and has all good options... You can ask JeepcoMJ, its a sharp looking vehicle.

I was thinking of selling it awhile back, here's the link to the thread(video of a walk around also):

I'm no longer considering selling it, but the for sale thread is a good rundown of my life with it. I wish I could get a 5.9L ZJ, but just can't justify selling my ZJ I have history with for another unknown...

Ah well, you have good taste in wheels sir.

Thank you. I'm pretty stoked to now own a vehicle that actually came with those wheels from the factory. Also, do you have any idea what the P/N is on the center caps for those wheels? As you can see, I'm missing one :D

Ya I'm missing a couple myself, I don't know the part number(which is mostly desired for the matching color) but they are the same caps as are used on the eccos, grizzly's, icons etc. Even KJ centercaps will work.

Popped one off last night and wrote down all of the numbers on the back of the cap:

5DY07

885PA66

25544A

Pretty sure these are it: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/4-Cherok ... ccessories

Cept they might not be the right color.
