OK guys, I need some ideas.

Every once in a while my 1990 4.0 4x4 automatic seems to get stuck in a lower gear. For example It doesn't shift at 45 as usual but stays in 2nd till like 60-65. Could this be the something to do with the little transmission power button?

Even in power mode, it shouldn't stay in 2nd that long unless you're pulling a load with the pedal at the floor.

My 88 XJ did that... turned out to be the TPS out of adjustment.

OK, let me be a little more specific. It is an intermittent problem. It's gone weeks without issues and then it suddenly comes back.

Today for example, it was fine on the way to work but on the way home it acted up.

It wouldn't shift out of 1st and into 2nd until 40 mph and wouldn't shift out of 2nd and into 3rd until 60 mph.

Doesn't seem to make much difference if I am in comfort or power mode.

check the quality of the fluid, it should be a clear-ish red.

if the fluid is dark brown, black, thick, or smells like burnt up crayons, you might wanna think about a transmission flush

Check the solenoid OHM's for the 1-2 & 2-3 shift. If they ain't up to snuff it ain't a gonna shift when it should. But, the symptons you describe could be bad TPS, TCU, or just bad connections. A failed/failing 2-3 solenoid will hold it in 1st until about 4300-4600- RPM before banging into 2nd gear.

I had a similar problem it turned out to be a corroded main power wire. I cleaned it up and it works like a champ. What you are seeing is the trans default settings for no electric power.
