HOrnbrod
Thanks everyone. Gotta think this one over.
mfpdm
Only thing on the Laredo package that can't be had on all the other packages is the body trim. Big whoop. Buy it, part it, and enjoy your D44. There's plenty of badges on XJ's if you want a Laredo MJ. Most would not know the difference. Now if it was one of the 100 Street MJs, then I'd be upset if it was parted. Tell the guy he can let it rot, or sell it to you so you can help many other MJ enthusiast with the parts.

If you tear apart a Laredo Comanche, you can't add those parts to another Comanche, and 'make' that one a Laredo. The 'new' Laredo would be a 'Laredo Clone', just like putting all the Rubicon parts on a non-Rubi would make it a Rubicon-Clone, or adding all the Street Comanche parts to a plain Jane MJ would make that a Street-Clone. I agree that collectors don't spend much time looking for MJ's, but if you can't *make* a Lemans into a GTO by adding a badge, then you can't *make* a base MJ into a Laredo with a badge either. (especially since AMC/Jeep documents their trim levels with the VIN)
HOrnbrod
Most Laredo MJs were made 87-89 primarily, although I've seen a couple of 90s. Most interior pieces of the XJ and MJ Laredo were the same (door panels, dash bezel, etc.) except for the MJ bucket seats that had a small piece of carpeting on the seat back to protect fraying the vinyl on the MJ cab back cab wall. The exterior body side moldings and emblems were the same too (just different lengths for the moldings). But the kicker like Jim says is that it's in the VIN. Even though I have a complete Laredo interior and can add the body side moldings and emblems, it will always be a clone because my VIN says so. :D I'd sure like to know exactly how many legal MJ Laredos the factory made as compared to other trim packages. I'm sure they are more rare than the Eliminators. Maybe the Chief was the rarest of all since they were only made in 87-88?

Yeah, it's kinda a catch-22, it's probably never *really* going to matter to anyone if an MJ is a 'real' Laredo/Eliminator/Chief/X/etc, but 'real' is real. I can guarantee that right now as I type this, somewhere someone is arguing that their 88' Ford Escort is really a GT model.
mfpdm
Yeah, it's kinda a catch-22, it's probably never *really* going to matter to anyone if an MJ is a 'real' Laredo/Eliminator/Chief/X/etc, Kind of the point I was making. Until one rolls through Barrett Jackson, the only love the MJ is going to get is from us old jeep guys. but if you can't *make* a Lemans into a GTO by adding a badge, I've seen many done and they still pull down a hefty price at auction. People that just want the look, don't care. It's only your serious collectors that want all the numbers to match. Scarcity is what makes it cool and unique. Doesn't that sum up all the MJs  My personal thought on the MJs that I would want to find and pay good money for are: 1. #1 or #100 Street MJ 2. Last MJ to roll of the assembly line. 3. Any Street MJ 4. First MJ to roll off the assembly line but only if I had #2 in my list. *Yes I'd like the Thunder Chief but that will never happen. Plus being label as a prototype it could not be license for the road.*

HOrnbrod
Kind of the point I was making. Until one rolls through Barrett Jackson, the only love the MJ is going to get is from us old jeep guys. How true Paul. I love BJ auctions, and see some 40s-50s mostly Ford (and a rare GM or Chrysler pickup) going for decent $$, but only because they have 10 miles on them, were owned by a celebrity, or were a one of a kind factory model. I've never seen a Hudson or Studebaker pickup at BJ, and really doubt any MJ will ever grace a Barrett Jackson auction either. The mainstream collector public regards the MJ as an unimaginative Cherokee XJ spinoff, and that's basically what it was. An attempt by AMC trying to save itself from extinction. Unfortunately it didn't work.
