freakjeep93
so today i was cleaning up my DD hyundai and i decided i should pop the hood and check the oil. considering i had changed it right after i bought it(couple months ago) and filled it a bit overfull i thought it was fine........ turns out there was NO oil in it . i put 2.5 litres in and its back to just over the full mark. I'm now carrying 1.5 litres in the car and I'm going to start checking the oil every few days. still i don't think this is normal... the car is a 2001 hyundai elantra 2.0L with 235thousand kms is it normal for a car to use oil like that. it doesnt leve any oil puddles in the yard or anywhere i park and there doesnt seem to be any accumulations of oil on the motor anywhere and it doesnt burn any so I'm at a loss to where the oil went... terrawombat
It probably burns it and you just don't know about it. My bet is that a good portion of your oil is being sucked into the engine past some worn out valve stem seals. My Mitsubishi does the same thing and the oil smoke is only visible on startup after it has sat overnight. Although it's never burned so much oil that it went dry... freakjeep93
well i crawled under a min ago and it does seem to have a leak it just hard to see so i missed it the first time. its by the rear most motor mount ill have to jack it up and see where the oils coming from. this is most definetly the last thing i need at the moment. kyleag89
Odds are its the rear main and/or the pan gasket.
Pete M
been there, done that. it's pretty unnerving to suddenly find your oil pan dry. the 4th (or 5th?) time I almost lost the engine in the 88, the rear main seal had blown wide open on the way home and I didn't know it. pulled over to check on a funny engine noise and found the dipstick to be completely dry. the good news was that I just happened to pull into an oil change place. bad news was I didn't have enough money on me and had to wait for someone to bring me more.
dasbulliwagen
My 1997 Hyundai Accent is the same way. Being a mechanic, Ive made sure that it has no leaks, and fixed them when I found them. But even with there being NO leaks, it will use a quart every 1000-1500 miles. I attribute this to bad valve seals, as there doesnt seem to be any other way for it to loose that much oil. It runs great, has as much power now as it did the day I bought it used 11 years and 120,000 miles ago. It had 36,000 on it when I got it, and I started it on synthetic oil at that point, Castrol syntec 5w50. I just need to keep an eye on it, as I don't feel like pulling the valve train to replace the seals.
freakjeep93
the only thing I'm abit worried about is that for the last coulpe weeks it had been making some knocking noise on startup and low rpm. and i never thought anything of it. now i know why and I'm worried that i may of done some damage. but after i put oil in it makes no noise and doesnt seem to smoke.the oil light never came on so i don't think i ever went completly dry.......i hope. I'm gunna check it out tomorrow. Odds are its the rear main and/or the pan gasket. yes ive been told that it may be valve cover or oil pan but that may also be the case

I keep a closer eye on it now than I used to, but with the blue book trade in value of mine being about the same amount as scrap value, I'm not too awful worried if something does happen. Though its such a good car, I hate to see anything like that happen... that and the fact that ive put about $1200 worth of new tune up, and maint parts into over the last few years. Dave Stark
Be careful not to overfill it as this can cause foaming & blown seals... I run my '08 Accent 1/2 quart LOW & so far this has worked well.
freakjeep93
well it seems as if its the valve cover gasket. theres oil on the backside of the engine and on the intake manifold. new gasket kit is like 40 bucks so ill pick one up this week. i also tightened all the valve cover bolts i got 2-2.5 turns out of a couple of them. but I'm going to replace the gasket anyway
