select track woes

Recommended Posts

asking this for a buddy of mine with an 86 xj. he has a 4cyl with an auto select track. it has a regular shifter for hi and lo but has a switch(vaccume?) to actually engage 4wd. he was wondering if there is an easy way to eliminate the switch in favor of a manual shifter of some sort. any one have any ideas or links advice?

Thanks

Short answer is ... I don't think so. The '86 MJ (and 84 - 86 XJ) used an NP 228 or 229 transfer case for Selec-Trac. It's a completely different animal than the NP/NVG 242 used from 1987 to the end of both vehicles.

I have the '86 factory service manual. It mentions the vacuum motor, in describing how the transfer case functions, but there is NOT A SINGLE WORD about it in the tear-down and reassemble part of the manual.

See if you can find a diagram of all the vacuum lines and go through it and make sure all the lines are good and in the correct places. My old 86 Grand Wagoneer had this transfer case and there were a ton of vacuum lines. My new parts XJ also has the auto and NP228 selec-trac and Ive been wondering about adding it to my 87 MJ, so Ill be curious to see what you figure out. Good luck and keep us posted!

little off topic, but i wanna figure out there's got to be a way to bypass the safety mechanism that only alloys you to use low range in 4wd. it would at least allow for rear wheel drive low range. not sure why, but why not.
