holeski
What all is involved with making the 1996-2000 XJ - OBD-II engines work in the Renix MJ/XJ? I have everything that was under the hood wire/computer wise. Is it doable and how do you wire the computer and harness in?
JeepcoMJ
you need the complete engine harness, ALL engine equipment and accessories, need to make a jumper to adapt the renix fuel lines to H.O. fuel lines, you need the transmission wiring harness (ties into the engine bay harness), and you need the complete dash harness along with all of the dash electrical assemblies plus the 96 steering column. oh, and the cooling system, too. if all you have is the engine electrical, you don't have enough. there is not a feasible way to make that work. kro10000
Personally I wouldnt do a 96, 96 was the only year for OBD II in that style, and there are gonna be a lot of hard to find parts, if youre wanting to do OBD II Id go 97 and newer
holeski
Not really hard to find man. I have 3 complete 96 blocks, harness and computers up to the fire wall. 91-95, 97 and newer are hard to find here. As far as the swap goes I thought so, but thanks for posting up. I'm going to go this way in the mean time while I build strokers for my YJ and MJ. 87, block bore 0.030 over 87, electric 96, 0630 head 96, valve-train 96, Intake 96, Accessories 96, cooling system 87, fly wheel turned and balanced with centerforce stage II 00+ NV3550 & NP231J with JB SYE
75sv1
One thing you might look into, is the flywheel. I think there are different timing marks for different years. I'd at least check an interchange parts directory for that. Or possibly the dealer. Tom
holeski
I know you have to match the fly wheel/CPS to what ever computer you are using.
JeepcoMJ
alright. let's set this straight. there are quite a few threads on this, so search and you'll find easy answers. that said, to convert COMPLETELY to H.O., you need EVERY single part from the dash forward that is electronic or mechanical. if you are just retrofitting an H.O. motor to run off renix, you use every renix part (flywheel, distributor, sensors, etc.), but you'll use the high output intake and exhaust manifold, and have to retrofit the throttle position sensor to work. 75sv1
I know you have to match the fly wheel/CPS to what ever computer you are using. OK, then I don't know exactly what you are asking. Since you have listed that you are using the '87 flywheel, I'll assume that you plan to use your Renix ECM and other wiring. I didn't go this route with mine. But from memory, you'll either have to adapt the ERG valve or delete it. If no smog laws, then delete would be the best option. The next is to adapt the throttle position sensor and also the throttle body. Since, I would assume you sent with the newer manifold, then keep the newer throttle body. That way it matches the manifold. So, what you need next is how to adapt the throttle position sensor. There are some writeup on the web for that. I remember someplace selling a conversion kit for this. It was about $100. I'd check Cherokee America for a write up. Also, maybe Rusty's for that kit.
