Well i need a tranny...........

Recommended Posts

my comanche treats me well runs good but the only thing that bugs me is reverse.

i got stuck in a 3' snow drift today when i slid into it this evening and i was stuck for a hour before my buddy pulled me out with his samurai. i know right a samurai. anywho

while being stuck i managed to work the jeep along 60' before no more success when i got the jeep reverse would pop out here and there and you would half to hold it in..

well lets just say 4x4 does not like reverse or vise versa.

when in low it wasnt that bad until i rev and let go of the clutch it would bang out then grind and make horrible noises. its getting worse and worse

i have a 89 jeep comanche pioneer 4.0L 5-spd 4x4

what trans do i need ?

will a cherokee 5-spd fit?

what is all needed for this trans change. i have don't tranny swaps and alot of mechanical work to race cars etc but i never messed with a jeep trans how long will it take and I'm guessing the auto trans are heavier then the 5-spd trans

please reply on what trans i need and a time estimate. I'm pretty fast at mechanical work and i have all of the tools needed.

thank you.

ob yeah whats the basic going rate for a used 5-spd 4.0L trans

Which transmission do you have? BA 10/5 or AX-15? 89 was a transition year.

If you don't know, check out this thread: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=11699

If you have a BA 10/5, toss it out and get an AX-15. There are quite a few threads on here, one of the recently, on the BA 10/5 to AX-15 swap.

If you have an AX-15 already, it really isn't that difficult to tear apart and replace the synchros... if you're fairly familiar with the inner workings of a manual transmission. You'll also want a press.

If that's the case, I would suggest finding a replacement AX-15, and take your time rebuilding yours. It's nothing to be rushed, especially if you've never done it before.

Somebody tell me I'm wrong, but isn't that an AX-15 2wd on the left? Cast intermediate plate, four bolts holding shifter cane in?

So I believe what he needs is this tranny but in the 4wd version? And yes I know the AX 2wd cannot be made to work 4wd.

AX-15s came with either an internal or external slave set up, the hyd lines both exited out the left side of the bellhousing.

Costs for used 4x4 AX-15 trannys, the first one I bought from a junk yard, through car-part.com. $800 delivered with all accessories. The second one, I found on CL, got all accessories, for $125 plus a questionable 231TC for free.

When I say accessories I mean clutch master and slave cylinders (make sure the dismantlers don't cut the line), shifter, all TC linkage and brackets (this is important because the TC linkage is specific to the tranny), crossmember, never hurts to grab drive shafts, especially the rear (might have a different output shaft spline count from your current setup), and it never hurts to have a spare front if the price is right (maybe free?).

Yes, the AX-15 is on the left. I was just pointing out that he was making his assumption on the slave bleeder... when they're in the same spot on both transmissions.

Note: The pic he posted is from the thread I posted, not a picture he took.

the peugeot is a bit skinnier than the AX-15, but they are the same overall length.

When you crawl under neath, does the trans have a series of bolts in a row running front to back? The Peugeot's case splits into a left and right half and has bolts along the bottom and top. The AX-15's case has a front half and a rear half, joined together at a 1" thick ring of aluminum.

you can see the thick ring on the AX-15 here

And you can see the seem of the Peugeot circled here. Note that the AX-15 has no such front-to-back seam.

Don't even think about rebuilding your pukey. Parts are expensive... and in the end, you'll still have a pukey.

If you can't find an AX-15 in the short term, you'd be better off picking up another pukey (I'm sure there's a few people on here that would me more than happy to donate you one), and run that until you find an AX15.
