livinginh
I'm new here, belong to some XJ boards but this is my First MJ. Ok, I just purchased this 1986 4X4 MJ, been sitting for awhile, 4cyl 5 speed. Here's my issues, nothing in the cab works as in my wipers, my heater motor, my horn, dome lights you get the idea. My dash lights work, and my fuel gauge kind works, my generator light stays on dim. Now the funny thing, if I leave my wiper switch on, they will come on every once in awhile but won't stay. Ive never had this issue with any of my XJ's so I am lost. Any help would be great. Thanks

Geonovast
First thing I would do is check your fuse box for clutch fluid. The master cylinders are notorious for leaking into the cab... and the fuse box is directly below it. Where in Mid Missouri are you?

I reached down as best as I could and tried to wiggle the wires where they enter the fuse box and nothing changed. I am an hour south of Kansas City I am right between Kansas City and Springfield. Truman lake area.
STERLING STINGER
have you checked your battery terminals?
Geonovast
Pull the fuses and check for fluid and corrosion. I had an 89 XJ that had a bunch of fluid leak onto the box, and it caused all kinds of funky electrical issues.
livinginh
have you checked your battery terminals? I pulled a couple fuses but not all. The ones I pulled looked good and nothing looks wet on the outside. But I will check them all. As for the battery wires, they all look good I even added a couple more grounds hoping it was just a bad ground.

livinginh
Does it run and drive ok? Runs rough, even after complete tune up, kinda week feeling going down the highway. But figured most of that was the 4 cylinder. Like its chugging almost on hills. Has alot of blow by also so I am sure the motor is weak. Main thing I wanted to get what ever this electrical problem was fixed then I would start searching for a motor.
-600JeepMJ
I was wandering were my gremlins had gone too. when I first got my 86 MJ a lot of the inside lights and suff did not work. but the more I used the truck the more stuff started to work on it own. I still have a few things that do not work like the dome lights and the right speaker. when the weather turns nice again and I get some time off I will start chasing them :wall:
mythreesons
:waving: Hi neighbor! Couple of things come to my mind: 1- You mentioned that the Generator light stays on dim. Did you check to see what the alternator is putting out? Not enough voltage out will cause some weird happenings. 2- How flexible are you? Speaking for myself, I am getting a little beyond the point of laying upside down on the seat, head at the pedals, feet in the pass. window. I can get there, but getting out isn't fast and it's uncomfortable. If there is a lot of work under the dash to be done or a lot of time to be spent, pull the seat out. Makes it a lot easier. :smart: I say all that cause it sounds like your going to be in the dash checking wiring all over. Is that lifted XJ of yours dark blue? Scott Scott: Howdy neighbor back atcha :waving: No my XJ is red. I havnt checked the output on the alternator yet, I figure if it is half way decent this weekend I will start tracking some of the issues. And see what I can find. You guys have pointed me in a lot of good directions to check, so here's to me finding the problem.
