does any one know if the bell housin is the same for a 2.5 and 4.0?

it is not they bolt up differently

so what kinda tranny do i need to swap my 2wheel drive to 4. it has a 2.5 and 5 speed now.

just get a 4wd ax4 or ax5 it will bolt right up. right now you have the ax5

You'll need either a 4wd AX-4 or AX-5. I would shoot for an AX-5, since you'll have the 4.10 gearing and the overdrive is rather helpful.

 

This, of course, if you're staying with a 2.5

 

Are you dumping in a 4.0? If so, you'll need a 4wd AX-15.

ok thanks man. i know that i can drop a front end out of a xj and bolt it rt up to my mj. and swap trannys and hook up the tranfser case shifter. doesnt sound like to bad of a job to do

no I'm gonna keep the 2.5 for now cuz it runs so good. future plans for a 327 swap.

You talkin about the AMC 327, or a Chevy 327? A Chevy 327 would be nice, but an AMC 327 would be TRICK!

If you've got a lot of yards and some time, try to find an AX-4/5 from an 84-86 or 93+. They'll have an external slave setup.

 

If yours is an 86 however, then you'll already have the external setup, and you can just migrate that over to the new trans.
