Geonovast
My Dad's got a 91 4.0 rebuilt with about 50-55k on it that he wants way too much for. The building company he got it from told him it would only go in a 91 so I think that's part of it. Motor doesn't leak or have any problems other than it may need a new balancer. I'm trying to get an idea of what it's worth, what you guys would be willing to pay, etc.
Automan2164
I would pay someone to take that off my hands... Sounds like junk... :rotf: Just kidding, Rob L.
NWPhotog
I wouldn't pay over $500 even that might be a stretch. I would think $300 would be a git it gone price imo.

Yes, I know that, but I think that's why he wants so much for it. The building company also told him there were 25 different valve covers used in 91, and that's why he had to reuse his old one. HOrnbrod
Sounds like the boys are trying to your Dad. You should square him away.

You should square him away. um. no offense to geonovast in any way, and I know he agrees with me....but his dad is F#@KTARDED when it comes to things like this. he's hoarded things such as used butt splicers, because there "will be value in them someday". correy has told his dad correct info time and again, only to have his dad say that correy is wrong. HOrnbrod
Okay, understand - I think guys. :D My Dad was also a hardhead, and we finally made peace after many many years. I'm sure my kids probably think the same about me now. Such is life.............
jpnjim
If you could verify the rebuild was done by a legit shop (25 different valve covers for the 4.0L in 91' :rotf: not sounding so legit 2 me), and that @ 50kmiles it still has great compression, the value goes up some: IMO, the 91-95's are the best engines, still use the original 87-95 (slightly bigger) cam + don't have the issue prone 96+ pistons, tho since it's a rebuild, who knows if they used the early cam & pistons :dunno: (FWIW, some prefer the 96+ cam, since it bumped up the low end torque). Getting a 96+ instead would have the benefit of the factory main journal girdle, and the block is supposed to have other HNV 'fixes' in it (tho it's widely claimed that the original 87-90 blocks are the best of all because of better materials used by AMC). Boil it all down, and it's just another 4.0L, with the 'good' 91-95 head, & 'who knows' inside for components. I think I paid $250 for the 36k mile 92' in my MJ. That was a very good deal from a friend. If you're thinking about buying this one off your dad, I'd be hoping for something in that ball park. For everyone else, something ~$500 is probably closer to reality.
Geonovast
This is the paperwork my dad sent me. It says something about more info on the other side, but he only scanned the front. I think the shop only told him that because they didn't want to admit to not having one for him. I seriously doubt any vehicle, ever, would have had more than a few different parts like that on one motor in one year. And no, I'm not trying to buy it from him. Just trying to sell it for him. Since he got his new XJ we're scrapping out his old one because the body just rotted out to crap. I too had been thinking in the 3-500 range, definitely on the lower end since it'd be going to a club member and the one interested is coming up here to help pull it out. Akula69
Genovast - I sure hope that engine core he turned in was junk (and un-rebuildable)....because 50.00 for the core just seems too low IMHO.

No, that was an extra core. We had the 4.0 from the first Jeep we had and they only took it because he was buying a motor. They said they had too many sitting around. We gave them two core motors. I think it would have been a lot more if he didn't have any cores. He did all this before I knew anything about Jeeps, otherwise I wouldn't have let him get rid of it like that.
