GirsMJ86
jeff told me that a rear d35 from a zj will work for the disc swap. are the discs just bolt ons? is there anything else that will just bolt on? i am replaceing my lines so i figured i would do this too. also how much should a rear zj d35 run for? the local pick-and-pull said 450 complete. i don't have that much to just blow to have discs so is there any thing cheaper or is that just way too much? alex
Bounty Hunter
That's way too much, disc rear axles run for $150-$250 'round here.
mjeff87
Alex, I'm talking about just swapping the brake assemblies from a ZJ D35 to your axle, not swapping in the whole thing (unless the 'yards up there won't part axles out). ZJ D35 discs (which come stock on some models) should be a direct bolt-on to your D35. You might have to get a bit creative with the parking brake cables. I'm swapping ZJ D44 discs onto my MJ D44. I was going to use Crown Vic discs, or ZJ D35 discs (both with some modification required) because ZJ D44 discs are a pretty rare bird, but one just happened to show up a couple weeks ago in the 'yard. Here's the parts I grabbed (and the ones you will need). The rotors/pads/parking brake pads were shot so I didn't take them...I'll just get new ones. GirsMJ86
jeff, how much did you pay for all that? and most of the places i have called won't part out the axles so i have to buy whole. maybe i will find a place though. alex
GirsMJ86
i am having no luck finding any around me at all. would some from an xj or mj d30 fit or not? i need to get my breaks back together so i am going to give up on the zj d35 hunt since there are none around me. need to know if this would work or not. or if anyone out there can get some zj d35 disco setups it would really help me out alot. don't know how much they would be worth though. thnaks. alex
Bounty Hunter
Swap in an 8.8 and be done with the brakes.
bdjr
have you called rusk brothers in ashely off 229, here is the secret to that place "they let you in based on how you look and how you act". I spent 3 hours there today(so i did something right) got buckets for my mj and rear seat belt acceptors for my explore and misc parts for $50 today. there where at least 20 complete xj, zj rears there. go there tell them what you are looking for and he lets you in. prices when you pay are never the same as when u ask for stuff. way cheaper!!! bill
87manche
girs, Have you called Milliron? They got a stack of 8.8s, not sure what elese they've got, but I knw that they sell just the calipers off axles, they may do the backing plates seperate. GirsMJ86
i will give rusk brothers a call and i called milliron and they told me they had no zj rear axles. i don't see how they don't but oh well. is the 8.8 a straight bolt in or would i have to mod it? i am just trying to get my truck drivable again so i am not paying for insurance for nothing. alex
Bounty Hunter
You'll have to weld on spring perches, and possibly adjust driveshaft length. The stock driveshaft is bolted to the 8.8 with a flange adapter, you can occasionally find an 8.8 with it attached.
mjeff87
jeff, how much did you pay for all that? and most of the places i have called won't part out the axles so i have to buy whole. maybe i will find a place though. alex $23 for all of it ;) but the whole swap is gonna cost about $100. I need to pick up new rotors, pads, parking brake pads, new spring/anchor kits, and e-brake cables if I can't get the MJ ones to work (I shoulda grabbed the cables off the ZJ for $5/ea but I didn't.....). Might also have to replace the mounting studs in the axle flange if they aren't long enough, too.
GirsMJ86
millirons does not do brake parts anymore. they said that they have not for about 12 years. i called all the others too and same story, no axles. so what is the most common config for the zj d35? i am going to look into the 8.8. thats a ford right? alex
4play
yep, 8.8 is ford.
