DirtyComanche
Yes, that wonderful little spinny thing that keeps the headlights bright, and the FI doing whatever it does. We need to talk about it. As in: What's the best option for renix 4.0's as an upgraded alt? The maximum stock size is either 100A or 105A (depending who you talk to). I'm shooting for 120A+. Pricey aftermarket options or custom rebuilds are out of the question, as I have a tendency to blow alts... How is the output controlled? Is this system compatible with that which is used in HO 4.0s, and ZJs? Obviously the cases are different (doesn't bother me too much yet). How about the popular swap with the HO engines which uses a 160A dodge alt? This would obviously work only if you could make a HO alt work with the renix. Blah. Double D ate it's alt on saturday, and the MJ's alt is in it's place right now...
JOMJ87
I had a guy in my hometown that took my old alt and beefed it up (he was a alt and starter repair guy). It only cost me about 30-40 bucks and it worked really well until my battery decided it didnt like it. Cole
87manche
Ho alts will not work. They are externally regulated by the ECU. look here for upgraded rebuilt alts in stock cases http://www.geocities.com/JeepI6Power/sjg.html
DirtyComanche
Yeah, umm, I don't want a fancy upgraded rebuilt alt. Because I KNOW it will get trashed, probably sooner rather than later. I NEED a donor that will work with the renix, that's it. I don't care about the case, or the pulley, or anything else.
Oizarod115
my brother went to the autoparts place and they gave him one that puts out 160A... thats been maybe a year now. optima battery and that we were runnin the winch, headlights, and aux fan earlier. don't know if that helps you (1990 XJ, renix)
DirtyComanche
Well, I can go ask the local guys if there is one. I don't want to buy one new and blow it up. But I can see if I can get a number and get lucky.
feerocknok
Any idea why they're blowing? I don't know the Renix system (at all), but maybe a bad regulator's all your problem?
DirtyComanche
Oh, alternators aren't supposed to be submerged in dirty water/mud. They do fine in clean water though. I'll get the pic of the inside of the air box from my XJ if you want an idea what I mean....

Oizarod115
dirty, if i were you id find a good high pressure spray (insert quarter and play) type car wash by your house and blast all that off right after each playsession. my brother killed his first Alt from mud, and we learned quick that sprayin eveerything off after makes life much easier... (especially keeping mud from fallin in your eyes when you're taking the last bolt off a t-case thats comin at ya :brows: )
DirtyComanche
Oh, that was AFTER $20 at the car wash. The alt was toast part way through the day, no avoiding it.
