Removing Front Axle Shaft

Recommended Posts

Not an MJ question specifically, but I can't get the Passenger side axle shaft out of my slightly bent D30 (non disconnect) Axle Tube... This is my TJ with the slight "smile" on the long side of the axle tube, and I have everything off, basically just the bare knuckle still bolted on. Not sure if the issue is the slightly bent tube or what, but it won't budge. The Driver side short shaft popped right out.

With a vacuum disconnect the outer shaft should slide right out, the inner shaft has a C clip. With a one piece shaft I believe it should slide right out also, but have not verified this personally.

The long side shaft on a non disco D30 should just slide right out. If you do have a bend in the housing it can be very difficult. I've had to use a 3 jaw puller to get shafts out of a slightly bent housing before.

Yah the housings bent a little bit... I guess I need more better tools to yank it out... I can't get the knuckle off becuase of the axle end, so it's hard to get much grip on the end of the shaft...

Since the driver's side is out already, you could take a long piece of metal, go in through the driver's side, and try to tap it out to at least get it started. :dunno:

Before or after I remove my ARB and R&P?

Not sure, I was thinking an open diff. You obviously can't get the carrier out if the shaft's still stuck in it. Did the shaft come out at all?

Not even a little bit... I might try to flex the Axle back down by connecting a strap under the axle to the lower side of the knuckles, or try to cut the tube off (without f'ing up the shaft)

To add insult to injury my Unit Bearing on the passenger took at dump (split badly) and I can't find a replacement 30 Spline unit Bearing and doubt that I'm going to be able to get any warranty love on since AlloyUSA went under and bought by someone else and then pass around again...

Lesson...stop jumping my Jeep...

You may check with Ten Factory. I heard they have been trying to warranty some of the old Alloy USA stuff. :dunno:
