Floor repair.

Recommended Posts

I have started to repair the floor of my 86. it only had two holes right behind the wheel wells about three inches wide and 1 inch tall. i plan on useing por-15 on the entire floor so it won't ever rust again and then rhino lining over that. but i need some sort of heat sheild between the por-15 and liner. so what i am asking is this, what should i use as a heat sheild that won't trap water and will hold up? or do i really even need one with the rhino liner being used? also if anyone else out there has ever ripped up their floors then i need some ideas on what to replace those crappy plugs that were in all the drain holes. i need to be able to take them out so i can just hose the floor off but they have to hold up against the heat of the dual exhaust. any ideas? will get pics asap. thanks alot.

For the holes I'd just make even flat metal and then find out where the low spot is in your design. Assuming it's not backed by anything there, drill with a hole saw that fits either a plug from a boat store or a TJ plug. There are a lot of people who just leave them out of their TJs so maybe you can get some that way.

As far as the heat shield, I've never used POR15, but in my XJ I used herc on the repaired floor and in the foot wells threw down some Husky liners. Before the Husky's went in, I put a 3/4" thick light blue exercise mat from the firewall to the middle of the front seats and just to the floor on each side over the hump. That was covered by a thin black rubber mat (for what originally I don't remember) that was slightly bigger and went all the way back into the rear.

Water and mud did get under and between the blue mat and dried but it never got funky and the husky liners pull right out. I don't think rust would be a problem, per se, because all the saltwater tracked in goes on or under the huskys and unless you submerged the hump or sprayed directly up under it most of the mud and water stayed out.

well pete i am following what jp mag did to their m-715. that is what they did so i figured it would work the best. and it isnt really a heat shield, more of a sound mat then a heat shield. although it works as one too. i am going to wrap my twin exhaust, put a heat shield on the underside once i get my oil leak fixed so it will stick to the underside, then por-15 the floor inside and out before i stick the mat up, then put the sound mat down, then rhino line it.

I thought they put the sound mat between two layers of Hurculiner? I'm pretty sure you can put the Hurculiner (or whatever bedliner you use) directly to the POR. I think the big question is whether or not you need the sound mat. I'm betting the magazine got theirs for free to do the article. It's incredibly expensive and I seriously doubt it adds all that much more protection over using the bedliner alone. In my opinion, adding a metal heatshield between the floor and pipes is the most effective option. Second after that is a removable interior pad.

they used the herculiner as rust prevention for the first layer. then the mat, then another layer of herculiner. so that would be the same as me useing por-15, the mat, then the rhino liner. and i will be doing this in stages as i get the money. so for now all i am going to do is wrap my pipes and por-15 the floor.
