BookspanS Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 What is the easiest way to get it off and is there anything else I should prob replace while I got that out?
jpnjim Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 Disconnect the battery first (duh). 2 bolts hold the starter in (15mm). One nut holds the relay wire on (10mm? I forget) & one 13mm nut holds the main power wire on.
tugalo Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 Disconnect the battery, remove the two wires from the starter. Remove the two bolts holding the starter to the engine. Its a pretty good idea to replace one of the bolts with a piece of all-thread rod and then use a nut. the two bolts are two different sizes. I'm retired Navy over in Westminster with 3 MJ's if you need parts.
BookspanS Posted March 4, 2009 Author Posted March 4, 2009 And I am active Navy in Easley bout to go visit fiance in FL. NAS P-Cola has a fully stocked garage (per words from wolfpackjeeper and my fiance) and she has a full free day there so I am buying parts and getting all work done there. I glad they got a lift so i not on my back. But thanks for the offer. I have fam in Westminister so if iever need any help I will give ya a holler

I did my 98' XJ's starter last week, and they were both 15mm. I know the older AMC stuff always used 2 different sizes (I was expecting the 98' to also), maybe when they changed to metric, they made the switch to one size. I'd check my 88' MJ, but it has a newer (2001) tranny, so I'm sure I used the newer bolts with that too.
BookspanS Posted March 7, 2009 Author Posted March 7, 2009 I can't find any of the for-mentioned bolts, I may just be blind but of course everything is caked with oil in that area as well, anybody have any pics? (my haynes manual only shows it in an I6)
wolfpackjeeper Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 mine were inverted torx bolts. I swear. Not even 12 pt sockets would take them off, I had to go out and buy the flipping socket that fit it. my XJ had two 15mm bolts. But the MJ was different. Granted I also have the 2.5l. I also had to take off a few other parts like some metal piece that holds the down pipe.
BookspanS Posted March 8, 2009 Author Posted March 8, 2009 Wanna give me a hand? I gonna be a P-Cola base next week and was going to do the work in the garage there.
wolfpackjeeper Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 as long as it is not Wednesday or Friday. I caught a watch on Wednesday sitting in the Air Wing Duty Office from 8-8. Ittl take 20 minutes on the lift.
BookspanS Posted March 8, 2009 Author Posted March 8, 2009 I'm there from the 14th til the 21st, so just whenever ya got a chance
Geonovast Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 The 4.0 starter and the 2.5 starter mount differently. The 4.0 mounts to the transmission, with hex bolts. The 2.5 mounts up into the motor, with two screwy torx bolts, one of which is hard to get the socket onto, and you pretty much do need a torx socket. There's also a shim on the 2.5 starter.
wolfpackjeeper Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 yea, they are both cake as long as you are not flat on your back and trying to do it in the dark with a flashlight
BookspanS Posted March 8, 2009 Author Posted March 8, 2009 Thats why I voted to do it when I had access to a lift
wolfpackjeeper Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 I may go ahead and try to cut my springs and get the blocks before you get down here. With two of us it should not take long at all to swap to shorter springs and control arms. Blocks are cake.

You compromise the springrate, and your ride quality probably won't be that good. If you can get your hands on some ZJ rear coils, they'll go right in and lower the truck about 1.5-2 inches.
wolfpackjeeper Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 I think I have a watercooled chopsaw I can get my hands on for about 20 minutes, should negate most of the tempering that would occur. This is really just so I can see if I like the drop, want more or want less. The yards around here should have the springs, just would like to see the look first before I spend any more money. I have an extra set of springs to cut, so worst case scenario is that I hate it and I swap them right back out.
BookspanS Posted March 9, 2009 Author Posted March 9, 2009 Sounds like a plan, gonna have my fiance with me so it will be three of us working on both trucks. Might swap out batt. cables and I like the idea of lowering but I have no tools to do it with
