Whine while accelerating

I've got a whine at higher speeds on the Comanche. I can hear it very well in the cab, and it's hard to tell where it's coming from. It only whines when accelerating, if I let off the gas the noise completely goes away. There's no noise at speeds below 35MPH. Anybody have any idea what it could be? It's 2wd so I don't think there's anything up front that could whine like that.

 

It also seems to be almost non-existent at first, but as things warm up the whine gets louder.

Its the ba10 in it talking to you.. Its normal that tranny just like to run its mouth...

Your only hearing this 'sound' when your under acceleration????

 

First guest is to check your Harmonic balancer :hmm:

 

See if any of the "Rubber" is coming out of the front of the pulley, that's a sure sign that the harmonic balancer is "coming apart" and causing the noise.

 

Check that out first, and get back with what you found ;)

Yes, some of the rubber is sticking out of the pulley, but would that cause a whine while accelerating? There is no whine while stopped and stepping on the gas.

Seeing as how you say you have the AW4, it could not be the BA10 making the noise. Could be the pinion bearing in your Dana 35, assuming you have the Dana 35 like most of us do. Go under your truck and see if there is any slop in the pinion going into your rear axle. If there is a lot of up down side to side play, it may be time for you to look for a new rear axle. Should I check with the drive shaft off? When I checked the U-joints a few weeks ago there was no rotational play in the drive shaft. I didn't check for up/down play at the pinion though.

Yes, if any amount of the Rubber "bushing" is sticking out, that would cause the whining noise, you should hear it Parked, and just hit the throttle cable, as the RPM's increase, even louder as the engine is under 'load' (IE: in gear)

 

About now many miles you have on this engine???

The driveshaft doesnt need to be off to check, just grab the pinion and see if there is movement there that shouldnt be. just turning the shaft to check the U-joints are bad may not show a bad pinion bearing. You could pu the rear up on jack stands, chock the front wheels real good, and have someone run the truck in gear for you to see if you can duplicate the noise. It has work for me before diagnosing a bad pinion bearing. Just do it in an open area and stay out of the way if the vehicle falls, and the person inside can be ready to hit the brakes. Or better yet, do it on a lift in a shop. If the noise is truly speed related and in the driveline, you should be able to hear it doing this. And if not, then time to check to front end! :cheers:

I replaced the Harmonic Balancer, and still have the noise. It's loudest between 40-50MPH over 50 and it seems to get quieter. When traveling between 40-50MPH If I'm on the gas it whines, as soon as I let off it's silent. What could whine like that?

Dana 35?? The letting off the gas makes me think its the rear end..

Anything in the drive line that would stop whining when you let off on the gas, taking the torque off would show up.

 

Hows the fluid levels in the rear, tranny, Trans case??? What shape are the U-joints in??

 

IIRC when you first started this, you had the whine when you were stopped.....parked, right??

No, never had the whine in park. Always on the highway.

 

The fluid in the transmission and rear end is good. I just changed them both (the whine was present before I changed the fluids)

 

Also, it's 2WD so no transfer case, front diff, etc.

Well........the next thing to try, and use a whole lot of caution on this!!!!

 

Block the front wheels, fro and aft, jack up the rear end, and put the axle on jack stands, only enough to clear the tires of the pavement, about an inch, start it up, and put it in gear, and see if you can find the source of the noise. If you need to have some "drag" on the wheels, apply the parking brake so it acts like a "load" on the wheels.

 

With running around the back end, and listening, it should tell you where the whine is coming from, like in the pinion bearing, or left / right outer bearing. I would think it's one of the axle bearings, cause there 'dry' bearings, only packed when installed.

 

It's best if you have someone help you do this, in the drivers seat, and ready to apply the brakes if needed.

 

We don't want to make you do any unnecessary repairs, but the problem is.......your there, and we're here, and we can't hear, or feel where the noise is coming from ;)
