Found a Comanche DANA 44 but will it work

Recommended Posts

I have come across a DANA44 w possi-lock of a Comanche (2x4)

I have a DANA35 on my Comanche (4x4)

Several questions.

Will the DANA44 work in my MJ?

Use the same drive shaft?

What might the gear ration be in the 44 - for sure it is not going to be the same gear I have upfront

I also read that only the 86 MJ metric ton came with a DANA44 stock?

The 86 metric ton came stock with an AMC 20. The 87-92s with the metric ton, offroad, and towing packages came with the D44 stock. It will work if and only if it has matching gears to what you have now. If it does not have the same gear ratio as your front axle then you will have to either: change your rear gearing to match the front, change your front gearing to match the rear, or find another front axle with the same gear ratio as the rear to put in.

Will the DANA44 work in my MJ? -- Yes

Use the same drive shaft? -- You may have to have the shaft shortened just a bit

What might the gear ration be in the 44 -- No way to know that for sure. Might be able to make and educated guess if we knew exactly what it came out of...engine, tranny, year etc...

The D44 was used in many years, just not real often in the MJ's. It's a good find regardless
