aw4 flush, fluid specs

Recommended Posts

The filter in it is a mesh screen type, not a composite fiber type. It is a MAJOR PITA, usually, to get the pans down and off of them. The two piece dipstick tube is what bites ya. If the fluid isn't smoked, it is shifting OK, then I would try a flush. And I am not a big fan of not changing filters. But I've had my butt kicked by so many of them darn tubes :headpop: :fs1: . It takes Dexron. The newest Chrysler literature says to use ATF +4. I aint buying it. It's an Aisin trans and they work great with the much cheaper Dexron. If I was going to use something else it would probably be a aftermarket high temp stuff.

If ya just pull the plug, let it drain overnight in to a pan. This will get another quart or two out.

It uses Mercon/Dexron. Do NOT use ATF+4, even if the idiots at the dealership tell you to. :shake:

Yes, change the filter. It really isn't any more difficult than changing the filter in most other automatic transmissions. I actually think it is easier since the AW4 has a drain plug that most don't.

What is your trick for separating the dipstick tube?

Pull the pan straight down. Maybe twist it back and forth a little as I take it off.

Thanks for the replies.. I think I'm just going to take it to a speedway and have them do a flush on it. Read somewhere that these AW4's like Toyota T-4 ATF.

Unless Toyota T-4 ATF is the same as Mercon/Dexron, don't use it.

If you have a lot of miles on on that tranny, avoid a flush. You may do it in

From what I gathered when looking for info about the AW4 fluid flush, was simply not to. Just drain the fluid (they have a drain plug) and fill to the right level. This way you are only replacing about 1/2 the fluid. Do this two times over 6 months of driving to get a fluid flush slowly which is what is recommended for the AW4.

Use the Dex/Merc fluid. It was $2.50 a quart and my local Autozone had a ton of it. Plus its the cheapest tranny fluid out there.

Exactly what I'm going to do.. I got a few gallons of GM Dextron III about I'd say a year ago,, I had about 3 1/2 qrts left and used it..

So far, so good.. Well the test drive it did well... I guess I'll just have to wait and see..
